In car wi-fi security system?????
I was looking for ways to develop an in car photo system that could send pictures via wi-fi internet connection to a home computer. This system would be triggered by all types of alarm triggers ( i.e. sensors, pin-switch etc) and could even be set-up to get photos of the exterior surrounding the vehicle. It could be used as part of a security system and linked to a remote key fob.
Would it be better to link to a carputer or use something else???
Could I use a separate battery to run this system???
Could the second battery be wired as a back-up????
Thought someone might have suggestions. Thnx

Interesting Idea.
First off you'll need Wi-Fi service which is available in a handful of cities - it covers only a portion of the city too. Better would be the cellular wireless Internet service which runs about $49 a month here.
You'll need a second battery - running a car computer is going to eat up some amps as the thing can't shut all the way down. There are many GPI (General Purpose Interface) cards which will take a contact closure or a voltage and trigger the computer. You'll need to have the computer wake up and start the video capture. You'll want a solid-state hard drive if you can manage or at least a small 2.5" which is power friendly.
You might want a GPS to also integrate into the transmitted signal so not only do you know what the fool looks like, what the neighborhood he's driving through looks like, but the actual location to boot.
The system would also double duty as a normal audio-keg connecting your video iPod etc into your stereo. Live traffic updates, weather, and gas prices would be simple enough.
You could also enable some sort of bi-directional control allowing you to kill the engine with a proper password entered by the remote viewer.
Given the pace of development in the car A/V world and the expansion of the Internet I foresee a commercial product of this application in the next couple of years. When and if the US government sells the 700 MHz band there's going to be some interesting mobile services develop. Overseas they're so far ahead of us both wired and wireless it's sad.

Paul350z ..chiming in big time!!! Great input!!. I am not a computer pro but somewhat familiar and given the state of technology I do not think it will be that hard to do.
Good point about the use of cellular wireless Internet service vs wi-fi for the transmission. I am going to do some more research and come up with viable solutions. This might be the wave of the future!! Imagine being able to monitor your car and surrounding area from anywhere in the world!!!
