Default looking for a "value" stereo setup

the friggin stereo in the 350Z is horrendous! i usually don't give a **** about stereos and sound quality, but this is just too sucky...

so i was wondering how much it'd cost to replace the speakers an stuff and add a subwoofer...nothing too expensive. like i said, i'm not much of an audiophile, and i can't tell that mp3s are worse quality than CDs, so i'm just looking into cheap-but-good-value systems.

how much should i be expecting to pay to replace all the speakers and add a sub (do i need to get amps?). head unit, i have one in mind...

thanks!

I'll try to help.

I'll offer my suggestions in stages.

Stage I: Better speakers.
You have lot of options here. Just remember not to be cheap when making your decission. It will cost you more later.

Stage II: 5-Channel AMP
A well-built high-quality AMP will do wonders for you system. The factory radio does not put out clean power NO MATTER what Nissan says! At first you'll only use the 4 channels (No SUB yet) however it's there when you need it.

Stage III: SUB
Someone said that "BASS is expensive, and good BASS is VERY expensive!" There are really no shortcuts here, pay a professional to build you a quality box made for the subwoofer. Use the 5th channel for the SUB for now.

Stage IV: SUB AMP
Buy a dedicated high-quality AMP for the sub. The fifth channel will not be used again.

Find a qualified professional installer and you will be happy I assure you.

I actually took this route with my current car and I was very satisfied in the end.

thanks for the help!
now...for the speakers and the amp, what price would you consider "not too cheap"? i started looking a little bit, and it seems like speakers are ~100-150/pair and amp is like ~150-300. does that sound about right for a value system?

Yup, I suggest buying your speakers from ebay look at JL XRs and any amp that puts out 100-150 RMS prefereably JL 300/2.

Here is the thread on the system I put in. I still challenge anyone to beat it in the under $1000 price point.

No problem.
A quick search on eBay uncovered several name brand amps & speakers for about $500 total (Front/Rear speakers and a 5-channel amp). A value SUB with a custom enclosure will set you back at least $300.

Report back when you get it installed!

thanks for the info guys...so JL XRs are pretty good? what should I be looking for exactly? Should I be looking into replacing all six speakers or should I just get one good pair for the front?

also, where can I find the info for the sizes I should be looking for (and also which speakers will fit the car)?

thanks a lot for all your help....

Any of the JLs are great subs. Check out their new w0 line, they have great sound quality (competition proven) and they're the least expensive line JL carries. If you can grab an alpine M200 bass amp, do it. They're about $100 and they sound awesome on a JL 10w0.

As far as speakers go, it depends on how far you want to go. If you just want to buy speakers for like $50-80 a pair, you might as well keep the OEMs. I'm sure you can get some for like $120 for rears and $80 for fronts that will sound better than the factories but you're gonna need to drop around $200 a pair to really get good sound quality. Components wouldn't hurt. It all really depends on how much money you want to spend, and how much you want to get out of the system.
