Question Nissan Nav or 3rd Party?

Hey guys,
I'm getting a new Z in may. I was wondering if you thought the Nissan Nav system was necessary or if buying a 3rd party one like a tomtom or garmin would do the job. Considering the Nissan nav bumps up the MSRP by $2420, I figured I'd see if anyone here thought it was really worth it.

If you want that 100% OEM look and integration, theres no other choice. It's much more hassle to get a nav unit to mount in the forward cubby, without a lot of work. Replacing the double din factory head unit with a double din nav unit is the simplest solution. Seeing as the factory head unit, Bose or Base, both are fairly low quality, you can get an aftermarket replacement from 600 dollars or more, some get close to $2000. All of which are better quality than the factory nav.

The major advantage of the OEM nav, is simply how its integrated, and if you ever plan to sell your car, it can possibly be added to resale value, whereas anything aftermarket you pretty much end up getting pennies in return.

I choose to get the OEM navigation back in 2002 when I purchased my car. However, it was only due to the fact that it came with the lid door that would go over the navigation screen to hid it completely. Being that the newer cars no longer have that feature, I would opt to go aftermarket if I were ordering a car today. Aftermarket just offers so much more flexibility over the OEM unit and at a cheaper price.

I have factory nav and it is very nice, but it has a lot of disadvantages as well. I don't know how the new nav works, but in order to get maps on my nav I would have to buy a new dvd for $190. Also, since I have an '03, I can't even get the newest maps. My nav does not re-route for traffic which would be a very nice feature for driving through the city. If I had the money, I would have my nav replaced with an aftermarket system.

You can do alot with $2420 nowadays :P

You can probably get the Avic D3 and a decent aftermarket sound system put together for that much $.

Do both work?
I have factory Nav. in my 07.
Thinking of removing bottom radio?
I would like to have ipod, sirius, backup monitor, etc.
Can I do this with new radio & still have factory Nav. work?

Thanks for any tips!

Yes, but you would have to add an amplified speaker directly to the OEM navigation audio output in order to retain your voice guidance.

the stock head unit is crappy anyway so get the Pioneer Z2 nav/stereo for less then factory but a better unit.

Here is another alternative for a head unit and a navigation system. I believe it is available for about $700 installed at Circuit City.

Does anybody have pictures of an aftermarket nav system in the cubby where the OEM would be?

+1 One of the better installs I've seen.

Back to the OP, I have factory Nav in my car but I still ended up buying an aftermarket unit for travel purposes. It is so useful in a rental without the need to wait for a DVD update.

lol, yes you are. I have neither in my touring. The original owner put on all the goodies except that I think I'm going to get an Avic D3 while they last for a good price.
