Default Factory stereo not working right? (2003)

I have a 2003 Z enthusiast with the factory headunit in. I think the previous owner had an aftermarket stereo and didnt hook everything back up correctly. The volume is terribly low, you have to turn it up to 25-30 just to hear it, and it gets terribly distorted that high. It sounds almost as if it's just running off of the line-out instead of through an amplifier, if that makes any sense. Can anyone help with ideas or a good place to start? Thanks

Haven't the faintest idea. You will have to track all the wiring from the head unit to the speakers.
