Default Radar Detector Wiring

Just bought a passport 8500 and need to hardwire into fuse box. Am I better off paying a shop $50 to do this and risk them messing up my car or is it easy enough to do myself.

Would appreciate suggestions and a "how to" for wiring myself if its not overly involved.

Thanks

Just found a thread dated 4/14/03 where they wired to the overhead lights versus to the fuse box. Is this advisable? Sure would save alot of hassle. The pictures he had however would not open up.

Still need advice and instructions.

I found the thread referring to the Zip Corvette Mirror mount for radar detectors but I am concerned on its use on the Z and my passport 8500.

According to my calculations I need a 3/16" by 4" rod threaded on both ends. However, if I can use the existing threaded hole for the mirror bracket I could screw the rod right into the existing hole without rigging up a bracket around the mirror. The finished look would look much more professional.

Has anyone done this and if so, what is the size of the thread going into the mirror bracket?

Also can I wire into the existing power for the mirrors since I have autodim and RF control in my mirror?

Thanks

I was worried about overloading the circuit so went straight to the fuse box using the piggyback fuse block obtained from autozone. I ran the cord tucked along the top of the headliner, down the pillar tucked in the ruber gasket, and then into the fuse box. Very easy and no parts had to be removed.

Sands,

Thanks for the feedback. I actually found the How To Thread and there were several good discussions on wiring radar detectors as well as the hardware install. Sounds like most everyone goes to the fuse box.

My only remaining question is getting the right sized bolt to screw into the existing mirror bracket.
