Default alarm "scanner" -- help with wiring

I recently installed one of the led "scanners" for your alarm (maybe 5 or 6 led's which pulse back and forth, different patterns, etc...) For the install you need a constant 12v, ground, and accessory 12v which will turn the light off once the key is inserted/car is started. I hooked the constant to the yellow wire from my radio, a common metal chassis ground, but for the accessory I hooked it up the the red radio wire. It would turn off once the car is started, but once the key was removed, it would never come back on.

Question is: is there a -better- accessory wire I should be using? if so where would it be located and what color. thanx!!
