Default Navigation DVD update v6.2

I just got a postcard to order the updated DVD for the factory navigation. The bad news is that the DVD is $185! But if I order by 10/31 shipping is free. Jeez, thanks a lot. I never expected the DVD updates to cost this much. Maybe I'm just igonorant, but I was thinking they would be somewhere around $30-50. Had I known they were going to cost this much, I probably would have skipped getting nav. I mean, $1999 plus $185 a year?

Looks like I'll be updating every 2 or 3 years.

Does the updated DVD include everything besides the latest maps? For instance does it have more Points of interest in the database or any other new features?

Here's what their site says:

Improve your vehicle's navigation system performance with new updated map information. The latest DVD map version "6.2" coverage improvements include:

Updated Navigable Street Data
Millions of Updated POI's

And much much more!

Not sure what the "much, much, more" is, other than the cost.

Hey, by the way, I grew up in Matawan, NJ and went to St. John Vianney H.S. in Holmdel.

Wow, small world. I graduated in 1986. I don't get back to Jersey too much anymore since my parents moved away a few years ago. I went to my 10 year reunion a while back. I'll probably go to my 20 year reunion. Man, that's only 3 years away. I'm getting old!

It is a small world....I have lived in AZ for 7 years now....I go back to Jersey usually at Christmas time to visit friends and family. I miss the summers in Jersey...the summer here is brutal.....thank god the winter is almost here.

When I first read your post, I was like, why is he talking about DVD's in a thread about New Jersey. Then I remembered...

Are you saying he has to pay over $1300 everytime to update the DVD's?

Well, it's a 2001 so I think he's gonna wait a couple (by couple I mean like 4) years before he updates cause that's a lot of money!

If you pop the dvd out of the player it will be marked with the version number. My version number is 6.1.

The Caddy with the nav system and multiple discs is probably not a dvd based system. When multiple discs are required, it is usually a cd-rom based system. DVD's hold a ton more information than CD-Roms, so only one disc is required.

I think you mean CDs. The older systems (Before DVD-ROMs) used CD-ROMs which could only hold a region's worth of information. My '99 ML has this (NavTech OEM to MB) and the region I have only has the Mid-Atlantic and New England states. Each region is $149, but you can buy just the regions you travel in.

Now, I'm the biggest advocate for copyright protections on the planet, but I'm still not going to fork out $185 for a DVD that may or may not have the latest updates in my area.

There are several roads in my neighborhood and metro area that are not on the 6.1 DVD, but I'm not going to gamble that they are included in this latest release.

If someone who is willing to fork out the dough wants to make some 'try it before you buy it DVDs' I'd be willing to pay a few dolllars and shipping to see if it's worth the big cash.

If they are there, then I'll buy the update.

Will I'm a supporter to the creator of the DVD software. I don't mind paying 185 for the upgrade. But my question is, is it really worth it? Just for a few extra roads?

I wish they would offer some sort of upgrade program that as were you can mail your old cds to receive discounts on the new one.

But anyways, yeah I'm willing to purchase it and burn copies for you guys. But it also depends on how many people would want this kind of offer.

I'm not trying to make any kind of profit. But whomever we can round up, the cheaper it is.

If anyone is interested or against it by any way, feel free to PM me. I might not do it also.

Just trying to help out my fellow my350z members. :-)

michael,

by all means please contact me, i have no reservations about taking a copy because at 185 a piece, they are not hurting for money...no one ever cared in the 80s and 90s when we all made copies of tapes or recorded off the radio did they???
