Default wiring my component speakers and amp

hey guys. im going to be changing up my audio setup a bit and thought i had everything understood pretty well, but a friend of mine gave me some advice which Id like to share with you guys to see who's correct:

i have a kenwood ddx512, infinity 6020cs components, and a jl audio 10w3v3-2 (2 ohm)

im going to be buying 2 amps, one for the sub and one for the components. now MY understanding was that i would connect an RCA cable from my HU to the input side of my sub's amp, then connect another rca from my sub's amp's output side to the RCA input of the component speaker's amp---

my friend said that doing this would cause signal distortion and that i should wire up my front components to the "front" output on the HU and the sub to the "rear" output on the HU... basically making the two completely independent of each other.

which would be the better (or the correct) setup? this is a vital step because some amps have rca outputs and some dont, and i dont want to buy something i cant use. any help would be appreciated!!

I would suggest running 4 channels of RCA's. 1 stereo pair from the 'front' outs of the headunit to the amp powering the components. Then 1 stereo pair from the 'sub' outs from the headunit to the amp powering the subwoofer.

Could you run 1 stereo pair of RCA's to a sub amp, then from the sub amp's 'preamp output' to the amp for the components? Yes, but then you lose the ability to use the built-in crossover, equalizer, and fader in the headunit.

ah, this is true... so basically i can go with a setup of amps with no rca outputs, correct? i completely forgot about losing the ability to use those functions! thanx

Correct. Don't buy an amp just because it has a preamp output (or passthrough as some call it).

The best part about running cables straight from your headend to the subwoofer and components separately is that normally the headend has some signal processing/controls for the subwoofer. Mine has a built-in crossover adjustment and bass level (gain) control. Adjustments using the headend GUI is pretty easy.
