Turn your OEM Glove Box Into A Sub Box
#21
Here are a few Photo's of my install in my everyday driver F-150 Supercrew. All Subwoofers fire forward into the rear seat , the sound is the same sitting in the front or rear seats . This vehicle has amazingly tight accurate bass .

I would also like to state that it is not my intention to argue with members on this Forum . I was simply posting an easy to do mod for roadster owners , that has great visual appeal(you can actually see your drivers) and believe it or not sounds very good . Will this box flex? Absolutely , but as long as it's sealed air tight , you will probably only lose a couple db in output . Not a big deal to me as I've always competed in SQ , and Don't like boomy bass anyway . (Ported , Band Pass , etc). Like I posted before , the SRQ box produced very little in car bass , and produced to many audible rattles . The CAS box is made much better , cost three times more and the sound , well see above . When I am finished with this mod , I will get in touch with some forum members in my area to have them listen to it . I will then ask them to write an unbiased report on this thread .

The diagrams at the bottom show what is happening to the sound wave and way rear facing subs often work better. Its a matter of getting the sound wave in phase. In a car reflected sound is huge problem given the small, odd shaped space... but all depends on the vehicle and the location of the speakers. Truth is you don't have that many options so its always a compromise.
In my old competition car (Honda Civic hatchback) I had four 10"s firing at the back window and it slammed HARD. In my current truck I have a custom center console with a down firing 8" which is a similar configuration. My home theater sub... yep a corner loaded, down firing design.

It has been a while since I heard anything about Xtant. I did not realize they were still in business. I just went to their site to check them out and they (the amps) are still just as beautiful and well built as I remember. Really nice stuff.

As stated before , been working 2 jobs so progress is slow . I've got the passenger side in and Oem Bose plate mounted . I am waiting on the Oem glove box rear mounting bracket (ordered from Nissan). I will then mount the driver side glove box , Oem Bose bracket and large Finisher panel . I will then mount the 3/4" Mdf rings to the Bose plates . More pics to come .

Got the SRQ box in my Z and everything put back together. I'm going to post a build thread with lots more details soon, but for now I can say it performs OK... maybe a 6 or 7 on scale of 1-to-10. With more sound deading I think it could sound even better.
As is there is just too much metal and plastic back there to complete kill all the rattles. I've got it to the point where its acceptable with a single 12" and only 250 watts (Kicker IX500.4), but more juice would cause problems I think. At this point the areas I didn't dynamat are (big shock) the worst in terms of vibrations... places like the spare tire well, factory speaker bulkhead and the sides under the tiny rear windows.
The main problem is firing into the small glove box area really mutes and softens or flattens the sound. I ran this same speaker (Polk MM 12") with a smaller amp (Kicker ZX350.4) in my last car (VW Passat) and it hit harder and deeper. If you into rock I'm sure the glove box setup would be fine, but if your into rap or bass heavy music its not ideal putting a sub there.
I need to listen to more tunes before I make any final judgements, but for now its acceptable. Its so much better then the worthless factory BOSE junk that I'm very happy. I just know it (from my previous install) it could sound better if I was willing to sacrifice storage space. Its a compromise, but one I'm OK with. Because as is the only thing you see in my car is the Alpine radio, everything else is hidden and I gave NO storage space at all. Heck even my amp is UNDER the passenger side glove box so I've retained full use of it.

Finally received the rear glove box bracket i've been waiting on . Installed the driver side glove box , Bose bracket and finisher panel . One of the pics shows the hole that needs to be cut in the two small panels . I still need to mount the two 3/4" mdf rings to the bose brackets and then install the subwoofers . More pics to come .

I have the Fiberglass door pods . Actually I'm glad to see you live so close to me . When I get done with this install , I want to find as many members as I can to hear it . Then I want them to write an unbiased review on this thread . There are alot of people on here that don't think it will work(sound good) . I already know it does , because I done the same to a buddys ZR .
