Default Subwoofer Question

So i'm completely redoing my audio in my 2005 350z (bestbuy employee accommodations though ). and i'm putting in a 10" kicker CompRT subwoofer in the factory location. However, my car did not come with bose so my cover does not have a hole in it for the sub. I'm thinking that instead of just cutting a hole in the cover i might just cover the area around the subwoofer with speaker/car floor style carpet. Anyone have any ideas for doing this? otherwise do you think I will get rattling if I just cut a hole in the cover?

BTW here is the hardware i'm putting in, with my bestbuy accommodations and employee discount I got it all for about $500

Don't bother, the sub will sound like crap if you don't mount it in a proper enclosure (the spec's of which Kicker has generously provided). Search and read through the audio forums for proper methods of installing a sub. Free-air method in the stock location is not one of those ways.

Would lining it with dynamat help things in the stock location? Or is there another way I could seal the enclosure? I can get dynamat very cheep through best buy accommodations and would like to preserve my trunk space. I am not looking for booming bass, just a little extra bass to make it a little more full.

stock location is fine with a proper enclosure. he said free-air in stock location is not.

check the volume - proper mount, seal, and porting will give decent sound.

there is more to sound than screwing in a couple extra speakers.

That's the sub amp, and the 4-channel amp is under the glove box. Everything hidden, looks original, costs zero space - and it sounds very good.

You can build the box for ~$60 in materials, and the OEM grille can be sourced used or new from courtesyparts.com for ~$40.

If you have a smaller budget right now, get a nicer head unit and speakers to replace the originals. You can add amp(s) and sub later.

And again, search the audio threads and see what others have done that works well. You're not the first to install audio in car that's been around for more than a decade.

Well, I actually have all of the parts listed above ordered from kicker a few days ago. It's all sitting in my kitchen now and they never charged my card so... I'm looking into options of doing it like dcains shows, I think I could buy a prebuilt box that would fit that area. Can anyone give me dimensions of the maximum height that could fit in that area?

The largest box with a simple shape is 18.5" x 12.5" x 6.5". You could make a larger box with a complex shape, but it's not worth the trouble for the small internal volume increase. The box needs to be rock-solid, airtight, and well-damped for good sound.

I'd strongly advise building your own like dcains suggested in a previous post.

Half of the boxes you buy are garbage and need to be sealed/dampened anyway.

So it shouldn't be a big deal making my own, as for dampening what would you guys recommend. Also, what would you guys recommend for the connectors integrated on the box? (I am kicking myself now for not just getting a loaded kickerRT that would have been perfect for this)

Pinned, screwed, and glued joins. Dynamat for dampening.

I'm not sure what recommendations you are looking for about the connectors? Are you asking about individual mount vs panels?

yes, those are fine to use. cut 0.125" - 0.25" bigger, and mat between the plastic and wood.
