I just got my Z about 5 days ago. It is my first car other than an SUV, so as you can imagine, I am flying wherever I go.

If there was anybody who needs a radar detector, it is me.

Does anybody recommend a particular one? or are they really all the same?

To answer your question of what is the best radar detector out there, you will generally get 1 of 2 answers: Passport Escort 8500 X50 ($300) and the Valentine One ($400). The difference is like ford and chevy, it depends on who you ask.

check out radartest.com - tons of good info and testing over there. the escort passport 8500 is consitantly ranked #1 and is over $100 cheaper than the valentine 1

 

I've had both the new Passport 8500 X50 and the V1. V1 wins hands down for me.

The two best are the Escort 8500 or the V1. Cordless is nice, but you can tap right into the mirror harness for power. The corded radar detectors always have better test scores.

8500 is around $270-$300 and the V1 is $399. Both go back and fourth for #1 and #2 rankings between the different tests each year.

I like the 8500 better, but thats just me.

Are there any that have remote sensors, like one that you can put up front and one out back so you can keep the unit at a lower point?

 

k40 can be installed in your car, with little light pods on top of the steering column. gonna cost you like 1200 for a perfect install with laser jammers, but it might be worth it if you drive like me

i have a v-1 btw. i trust the arrows every single day (saved me twice today on I-10)

The endless battle over which radar detector is the the best.
If your going high end, dare I say, they are all pretty much the same; Valentine One, Escort 8500, Bel RX-65.
The only real difference is the V1 has the arrows. Which I`ve been told by some V1 users do not serve any real world purpose.
But I`m sure some could argue that. :-)

 

The biggest value the arrows serve is in telling you when you've passed the threat. Driving down the road, the radar detector might tell me the threat is in front of me. If I pass it or it's going in the other direction, it'll tell me that the threat is now behind me. With the 8500 X50, it would just continue to tell me that the threat is still there, when in reality, the threat has long passed. To me, knowing where the threat is is just as important as knowing the threat exists.

 

how accurate are the arrows? how easy is it to use a V1... it sounds complicated w/ all the features

 

I just bought my V1 and hardwired it into the car, and use the remote display and its amazing. Once you use the arrows, you wont want to use anything else. It is super easy to use, so dont let that throw you off. I would say that both the V1 and the 8500 are great, but the features of the V1 and the testimonials on various sites did it for me. It took me 1 1/2 hours to hardwire my detector, and its probably my best upgrade yet. Get it and you wont regret it.

I have an RX-65, and its pretty easy to tell when the threat is past. The signal gets stonger, peaks, as as you drive away from the threat, the signal gets weaker.
Once you buy a good detector, and get to know how it responds to different threat alerts, you`ll be able to tell direction without arrows. Not to take anything away from the V1 though, it`s a great detector.

I just want to confirm what RJ said. I have a Bel and have know problems with direction of threat. You can tell quickly from threw signal strength.
Once you get a good detector you wont know how you got along with out it. Don't waste your money go to radartest.com and read for your self. Here is a quote from there new shoot out.

Go there and read, and see what best for you. I like the Bel with the voice alerts. It saves me on a weekly basses and is well worth the money.
