Default Radar Detector - non-permanent mount

Hey Guys,

I'm looking at getting a PAssport 8500 to use on roadtrips. I'm in a city and I couldn't even get a speeding ticket if I wanted to - unless I did something stupid - but Boston has too many pedestrians. Not to mention b/c of thieves, I wouldn't do a perm. mount.

Do any of you guys windshield mount a radar detector and stretch the cord ALL the way to the powerpoint behind the driver?

Doesn't it get in the way of shifting?

Anyone have any pictures? Or recommend any additional accessories so that I can do this without tapping into my rearview mirror?

i thought the power port under the cupholder was only on the 2004 models and not the 2003.

Roy, I have an 8500 and I got a "wire free" setup.. just like that thread.. We should meetup and I can help you wire it if you want .. it's not very hard.. you can either use the power off the mirror (if you have an Enthusiast or higher) or run it under the console to the rear cig lighter..

Hey Mike - sorry I had to bail on you guys Saturday. How'd the dyno session go?

The thing with using a mount like that is - how hard is it to remove the radar detector (I notice that particular one involves screwing it in)? I need to be able to just unplug it easily and throw it in my glovebox or my apartment. I'm in the middle of Boston - don't want smashed windows and missing radar detector!

But ya, we should definitely get together if you are willing to help me wire it. I wanna get a ride in your supercharged 350Z too.

I picked up a mount from Mike last week (turns out he lives right in my backyard). It's a great mount, will probably work on mirrors other than the Z as well. And Mikes a really great guy with some other interesting Z innovations - checkout his Z sun visor trim! (Covers the ugly factory warning stickers).

Before I realized I had a mount below the cupholder, I got an extension that worked well. I tucked the cord between the seats. I live in VA where detectors are illegal so I use a sticky pad on the dash and place my V1 on it. I use black phone cord so it doesn't stand out. I also don't won't a permanent mount because I use the V1 in my 3 vehicles. Totally low tech solution.

I have a non-permanent set-up. Try this:

Buy a lighter extension cord (non-coiled) from radio shack. Plug it into the back power outlet. Run the wire down, under the passenger seat, under the passenger floor mat, and have it come out in the passenger footwell. Then, you can plug your standard lighter into the extension in the front and you will be all set.

I needed to have more than one outlet, so I plugged a 3 outlet splitter into the extension, and perminently mounted it on the wall of the footwell in the center of the car. Now I have three outlets in the front of the car.

Good luck

It's real easy to remove.. just, unhook the wire, press the top release button and slide the detector out of the metal holder..

lucky you bailed.. it was a waste of time.. They didn't know where to get a reliable rpm reading from my car (spark plug wire didn't work for them?) and the dyno stopped reading at 5200rpm and did all kinds of crazy things.. I didn't even get one complete run.. I was hoping for ~370whp this time but now I'll never know.. no BBQ either ..

Does the mount work with the V1?

Sorry to hear about your dyno.

And thanks to everyone else for the replies. I guess in hindsight - an integrated solution would be best.

yes it does.. you have to specify the model of detector you have when you order it..

here's a pic of how my 8500 x50 is setup using that mount.. (It's under the mirror)

look ma.. no wires!!!

I want your car - droooool.

Your gauges look very integrated and I like your shifter and LCD.

I'm going to place an order for the V1 then. Where should I get the mount from? Any linky?
