So everyone talks trash about putting a 10" sub in the stock location saying it doesn't sound very good. Well, it doesn't sound terrible.
I put my Walmart special setup in the car to replace the Blose system and I'm surprised at the results. It's just a cheap Pioneer sub with the plastic outer ring removed to clear the stock grill, a Sony amp and a couple of 6 1/2" Pioneer speakers up top. I used a Dynamat door kit to cover the enclosure area. I used a little for the upper speakers as well. For good measure, I sprayed a little adhesive down on the Dynamat and put some poly fill to absorb some of the frequencies. I also put a little foam trim around the speaker edge to seal it a little more against the mounting plate.
Hits pretty good, but not tight. I like my **** tight No rattles and it gets loud enough for me. For those who want a serious sound system, this probably isn't for you. It might sound better with some quality parts in there, but it will do.

 

you are suppose to use a free air sub.

 

If the sub isn't free air, buy some MDF from Home Depot for about 10 bucks and make your own box that will fit in there. Will sound a whole lot better. Dimensions I used with 1/2" MDF @ 17.5 x 8.5 x 10." To reinforce the MDF you can use resin with fiberglass.

I did this as well despite what the "haters" say. It sounds like crap imo. When compared to the stock bose it sounds better but when compared to a decent set of interiors it is sub par. I even put a good sub (alpine type r) in there and tried to air seal the the inside with dynamat and still rattles like hell and doesn't even sound a 10th of as good as it should. I knew it was a long shot going into this but I figure for $20 in material and a couple hours work whats the worst that can happen.

With that said I am going to listen to what everyone said from the beginning and put a small mdf box in there or build an under-the-strutbar box. Haven't quite decided yet.

I have been working on systems for awhile and listen to me Don't bother using the stock sub hole behind the seat unless you are building a box to go in it.

 

I will be using the stock box but my Infinity Perfect is free air capable. I lowers the watts from 350 to 200 but the amp only pumps 250w. I'll update whenever it gets done but since it's free air I expect it to sound good.

 

Does anyone know the measurements for the box that would fit in stock location?

I like it better then the other brand and it's half the cost. Allthough with it being down fire, for tight bass you want dynamat on the bottom of the cubby unless you are one of those people that think nasty metal rattle is cool.

The biggest box of a regular shape which will fit is 18" x 12.5" x 6.5". If you use 3/4"MDF, the internal volume will be ~0.52 cu. ft.

I did it just like dcains did, sounds great. Just make sure you use some dynamat in there or it will rattle like crazy. Listen to dcains though, he knows what he's talking about.

I already have an Alpine Type S that came with the car, wasn't really planning on upgrading because I don't really listen to music loud.

I almost bought one of those, before I made my own. I didn't, because I had a few concerns about the design/construction. For instance, how does it sound without a grille opening into the passenger compartment. And, how is the box part fastened to the metal plate - don't see any fasteners, and I'd be concerned about the longevity of a glued joint.

 

Ok, so if I were to build one for my sub, is there certain measurements that I should use for the box? You said 18" x 12.5" x 6.5" is the biggest that fits, so is that what I should be aiming for? What about MDF, what size? Basically, what would be the most optimal measurements, if you know?
