Default Z a rip off? (attn:Aust owners)

This will probably relate more to the Australian members and other countries where the Z is a bit more expensive. But hey you USA'ers feel free to comment too

I was told by some 16yo kid still on his L-plates that, if he had 70k he would not buy a Z... it's not worth it blah blah blah... Made me wonder if it is a rip off here?

In America it's affordable due to the higher amount of competitors Nissan has there. But here it's still (after 5yrs) a rather rare-ish car since you can get a STI or Evo a lot cheaper.

In my opinion STI and Evos will always be family cars with a turbo yet the Z is a real "sports car" (no disrespect to evos/sti).... I know there will be haters to every brand of car so I'm not really worried by it... plus all 16yo's know about performance cars is what they pick up through the fast and the furious movies.

Here is a price list of base models from the same source (Wheels magazine).... (NOT the new evo, sti or m3 btw) so do you think the Z a rip off as a 2 seat, NA v6 sports car, in Australia???

Base:
350z - 62,990
BMW M3 - 157,000
BMW Z4 coupe - 88,100
Crossfire - 69,990
s2000 - 72, 590
EVO XIII - 56, 779
STI - 56,990

In comparison to its competitors, no; that's not to say that price is justified. That Crossfire is the ripoff.

Jerry, have you tried posting in the 'other regions' forum as well? I know that area doesn't get much traffic but hell, it's worth a try.

I think it is hard to justify the Z purely on the numbers.

Cheers bud, haha yeh I had a look there and the Australia/NZ forum hasn't been hit in months!!

Sorry if it's confusing, I'm just a bit cut as some of my mates kept saying "if you don't put a turbo on it, you're a ***" and "why so much if it's not boosted" and so forth. I know it's not everyones cup of tea, I'm not that egotistic to think it's all because they're jealous or something. Since I bought it I've had everyone telling me what else they would have bought for the money...

Just to help everybody visualize, I'm going to do a standard 0.4x conversion across the board to help people visualize the cost in relation to the other vehicles:

350z = $25,196
BMW M3 = $62,800
BMW Z4 coupe = $35,240
Crossfire = $27,996
s2000 = $29,036
EVO XIII = 22,712
STI = $22,796

When you look at it that way, the STI looks like a bargain compared to the others.

the numbers in () are the price comparison to the 350z. Looks like the prices are pretty much in line with US market. It comes down to whether you like the Z over the STi or EVO.

Australian market
Base:
350z - 62,990
BMW M3 - 157,000 (249%)
BMW Z4 coupe - 88,100 (139%)
Crossfire - 69,990 (111%)
s2000 - 72, 590 (115%)
EVO XIII - 56, 779 (90%)
STI - 56,990 (90%)

in US starting MSRP comparison of same vehicles are as follows
350z - 28,120
BMW M3 - 48,900 (173%)
BMW Z4 coupe - 40,400 (143%)
Crossfire - 35,600 (126%)
s2000 - 34,300 (122%)
EVO XIII - 30,000+ couldn't find actual (106%)
STI - 34,900 for the 2008 (124%)

I understand what you are saying. When compared to the EVO and Sti and only in the performance angle, the Z is kind of a rip-off. Last time I checked, the Z was comparable to the Evo and STi whereas over there, based on what you said, the Z is much more expensive.

There shouldn't be that much of a price gap.

If you start adding in the exchange rate comparison, then not so bad. Lol, jerry_2612, you pay less for your 350's in Auz, than we do in NZ. Lucky you guys.

It hurts even more to buy a roadster. Brand new they cost about $74,000. By the time you pay duties and taxes it's getting close to $80,000.

Doesn't sound like there are many Australians on here
