Default Is anyone going to FI the Z?

Hi gentlemen, (ohh and frostster and Haary too )!

I'm seriously looking at FI for my 350z. Either a single turbo or SC settup.
Has anyone else wanted to seriously import a kit or do a custom job localy?

I think it would be a reasonably priced exercise if we have a few people involved. Also it'll help with the research.

Right now there is 2 SC kits, 2 turbo kits and upteen custom possibilities. CAPA would be able to source the SC here so that is a unique benefit of the SC kits.
The turbos need proper piping and management gear. So it requires a quite a bit to be done here or it will be a costly import.

any thoughts?

There is one Z here in Perth in the process of getting a TT job done to it.

From what I've heard, it's a custom job done at my local shop, and it costs around $20,000. At the end, it is supposed to give 450-500HP to the car.

TT is way too expensive!

The 5000 USD kits are giving out 450hp at the flywheel. Sounds like the installer is taking a very conservative approach and replacing pistons, rods as well as the full custom setup.

The TT alone shouldn't cost more than 15 grand tuned.

Considering that the SC kits run fine on the stock cars the above method seems overkill unless you go for 500+ wrhp. But thats not what I have in mind.
I want something "streetable".

FWIW I have done a little research on this and I can't do what I want for under $20k but that's me having it done by the right people using the right materials. It could be done cheaper if you want to make some compromises but I don't believe it ould be done for under $12k and still be happy with the results. These are prices for turbo installs BTW. I've had aftermarket SC and I'm not intrested in following that route again. Cheaper up front but too much of a compromise down the road IMO.

gents.... wouldn't you think it will be better to do this kinda thing 3 years later when all our warranty issues voided already? I am sure with a FI in your car, dealer will not cover anything from then onwards...

so this is a good opportunity for all of you guys to save up and wait for the "right" kits to come along at this stage!

cheers,

richie

I've actualy thought about importing an engine from the Skyline as an alternative. It has been done in the US but i haven't seen much on the outcomes.

The output was around 600hp if i remember right.

Might be time to revisit that thread and see if they ran into trouble.

There's no way known Im going to spend another 10 - 20 large on the motor. Might as well put it towards something else, Elise or some such.

The only drama throwing all this cash at the motor is that you then have to go and fix the suspension, brakes, etc etc. Where do you draw the line at how much money you spend?

As always

Yes, that is true. But it's all about having fun with the car.

I'm more inclined to do a mild Fi setup and put some cash into the handling as opposed to a 500+rwhp beast.

Default POWERUP

Sit tight and get GODZILLA - then you get the whole package
all balanced out - and a resalable package at that.

From my point of view I'll never buy a Nissan again so even if the GTR does land here at a reasonable price there's no way I'd buy one. As for warranty I really question if our warranty is worth anything anyway. We've clearly seen that Nissan Oz aren't willing to acknowledge problems that are known OS.

I'll be honest and say I'm waiting to see what comes of the upcoming RX-7 and NC MX-5 so I really doubt I'll do much with the Zed. Good car, pathetic sevice.

lol.... do you think the GTR will be worth that much?

If we get the rx7 here i'd definitly be looking at upgrading to that car. It's just an amazing vehicle in every way.

I'm with aps and wait for the next RX-7 or if you are a Subi fan then the B11s (What ever it is called).

I would like to go for FI but my budget will only allow 6k for this mod. I looked into the Vortech SC and rang CAPA about it and they said "call back in 30 days and we should have pricing" The thing is looking at their web site is they only import the kit at US RRP which is pointless since they are a Vortech Distributer and should be cheaper or at least price aligned.

US$4800 for the V. SC kit plus all their markups and I would rather bring it in myself.

Now to get an idea of the price for a HKS 3037 + manifold is about 398,000 YEN which is about AUS$5200.

Then you have
Intercooler $2000
IC Piping $300
HKS FCON V ECU $2500
Injectors $1200
Clutch $1500
Tuning $500
Catch Can $200
Boost Controller $1100
VIP Card at Bridgestone $10
etc..

So at this point we are over $14K and have not spoken about internals or labour.

Sure it will go hard but my recomendation is start with a car that is already FI or buy a SC and be content. A SC is never as scalable as a Turbo but it depends on how much or how far you want to go.

Ask yourself is it worth it, How long will I keep the car. I personally spent $25K on top of my 99 WRX thinking I was going to keep the car for at leat 6-7 years. With all the insurance changes and living in Sydney I only had it for 4.

But if you have a business that needs a promo car. What the f*&k are you waiting for.

PS: If anyone is up for a Group Buy on the Vortech let me know.
