Default Clutch Rattle

Parking in the garage with the windows down for the first time - and upon releasing the clutch pedal after knocking it out of gear -
and there's this death rattle coming from the clutch.
Depress the clutch and it goes away - I ***** myself! What the fuggen!
Phoning the son to see what his is like.

Well that sucks! But don't forget you should still have warranty left over... right? That's what's its for.

Best of luck, + I would like to hear if it goes away or what the dealer says.

Dear 350zlvr - don't know about you blokes, but nisshit's warranty over here ain't worth a pinch of croc *****! (tyre roar episode on the table - almighty runaround. Nisshit's "flagship" - ********e)

Phoned the son - his is identical! ! !

What's the fuggen?

Sounds like a hubcap with a few pennies in (for you older blokes) - but not nowhere so loud.

Dont worry SHIZZLE, I mean RATTLE, Im here now!

Mine's the same, probably just the throw our bearing, and it sounds like it comes standard on this model.

She'll be right, as matey said, we've got the Nissan warranty.

As always,

Thanks Harry - best fix will be to leave the windows up!

Just been browsing the mods forum and there's a bit there about
"dual disc" clutches rattling. Maybe thats us?

Did you ever get pennies in your hubcaps?

Might get arrested for having a car bomb. No wonder the boy racers look sideways at me at the lights - I won't knock it out of gear anymore.

SHIZZLE, Im not quite as elderly as you! Ive never had a car with hub caps let alone with pennies in them.

However, I did go out with a bird called Penny for a while but that's a story for another day!

As always

Re - Duelling discs:--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is the advantage of a dual disc clutch over a single disc clutch?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two disks have twice the friction surface of one disk. The result is that you can make the pressure plate not as stiff, making for a clutch that is both easyt o drive (light pedal pressure) but can hold signifiantly more power than stock. Also twin disk clutches (and some single disk units such as Cusco, Exedy, and others) include integrated lightweight flywheels as well.

The downside of these setups is that becuase there are 2 rotating disks, when disengaged, they can rattle around a bit, so you have increased noise. It's not bad at all mind you, but it is there. These also tend to be grabbier clutches than stock in part due to the weight, and also due to the friction material used on the disks. The race only units from Tilton, AP and others etc. are downright nasty on the street, but they are ultralight and very compact. The larger units from Exedy, Cusco, etc (all of which are made by Exedy BTW) tne dot be more grabby than stock, but very forgiving compared to the race only units.

Frosty.
Its completely normal for the Z33 to have a noisy clutch bearing.
This is the first thing I noticed when I took the car home almost a year ago.
I'm surprised you havent noticed it earlier.
When I first asked my mechanic friend (from BMW) about it he told me its normal and that the M3"s bearing is much louder.
Mentioned it at 1000k service and they too say is a characteristic of the car.
Only if it gets louder and louder should you worry.
Mine has retained a constant level of noise.

BTW have you noticed the fuel pump hiss at idle with the windows up yet?

I've noticed the fuel pump hiss to, also get a rattle (I'm assuming it's the clutch) when I turn the car off, just a brief clatter as the engine winds down. I noticed it the other day when, just like Frosty, I was shutting down the car with the windows down (listening to the Hi-Tech as I reversed in, just lurve that noise) and I heard this rattle when I turned of the ignition, even though the car wasn't in gear and the clutch wasn't depressed. I was going to mention it at the next service but I may not bother now reading this.
BTW, does anyone get the clatter at cold start, just a brief second of what sounds like the tappet clatter I used to get on my old XC Falcon, it's not unlike the clutch rattle but a bit harsher sounding. I'm beginning to think the Z33 has the same V V T rattle that the SR20DET engines on the 200SX had because the oil pump is just a fraction too slow to get up to pressure.

Regarding the clutch noise.

I've had it since I bought it. Its just the clutch discs rattling.

My first car the XC, it was a piece of junk, but indestructable. Mine had so much rust in it I could never got lost, I just followed the trail of iron oxide flakes home. Another advantage was that you could r**t on the back seat without being a contortionist!

Ah! Summer nights at the drive-in. Jeez I feel old all of a sudden...
