Default Notchy Gears.... gear box problem?

I started to feel that my gear change is a bit notchy lately... especially it is really really really hard to get into 2nd gear either upshifting or downshifting. Also require an excessive force push the stick into the position. Sometimes if I stopped the car in second gear with clutch in of course, then find it hard to shift it into 1st gear sometimes while the clutch is still depressed.

As I mentioned earlier, I have changed the flywheel and also the transmission fluid (Redline) and I think changing the flywheel will not affect the gear shifting as I did not open the gearbox itself and the Redline oil is pretty good in my past experiences.

Do you guys think it might be the bad syncros? Should I take it back to nissan to have it checked out? I notice that if it is very hard to shift it into 2nd after I start the car, then it will stay that way for the rest of the trip, but if the shifting is smooth at the very beginning, the whole trip will be smooth though.... why????

cheers,

richie
ps. I always depress the clutch fully when I change gears.

I remember Nathan having issues when he changes his transmission oil to synthetic. Use some cheapo oil and see if it fixes the problem.

From memory he ended up using some no frills brand.

That could be it or didn't Richie mention that goldish plate that could be moved left to right making a difference to gear selection? If it was too far left it was hard to select 5th and 6th or too far right hard to select 1st and 2nd or soemthing like that. I'd check that first as it's the easier and cheaper option. There was a pic in his thread of the plate IIRC.

EDIT: here you go, the pic and explanation is in this thread:

Highly unlikely to be the oil.

APS:
That will not be the goldish plate anymore because that plate only affect the 5th and the 6th only. My bad about the 1st and the 2nd. If the plate is too far right, it is really hard to get into the 5th and the 6th, hard to find the position, and if the plate is too far left, there will be no 5th and 6th gear.

Nathan:

What do you think it might be? replace the tranny?

cheers,

richie

I just rang nissan up and they told me that it will be nothing to do with the flywheel (thanks god they said that).

They told me that they might need to do some "FINE ADJUSTMENTS" on the gear selector..... I am just wondering if that's what I did??? or there are other linkage that can be adjusted to make the better shifting?

Does anyone know about this?

cheers,

richie

It could be the synchros, but it also could be the clutch. What you describe are symptoms of a clutch that is starting to struggle (ie. not diss-engaging the gears properly).

It sounds very much like the problem with the first generation gearboxes.

As for the clutch it would struggle in any gear if it was worn.

I had the same problem with my car going into 3rd gear, eventually into turned into a grinding noise. Took my car to nissan it took them a week and half to fix the gearbox. Seems like its a problem with alot of people!!!

damn.... sorry to hear though....

I have this noise but don't know if it is normal though... it is like with the new flywheel, when I change the gear (to 2nd or 3rd) at 4000rpm... and yes.... only around 4000 rpm, as soon as I depress the clutch (when my foot is over the friction point), it makes the noise sounds like "wun".... passenger and me can hear it easily even with the windows closed. Does anyone know what type of noise is that? it might be related to the clutch or the flywheel?

BTW, what will happen if my flywheel/clutch isn't installed properly? will it make that sort of noise?

cheers,

richie

okay.... nissan told me that the noise is quite strange and it has the vibration with high frequency. It might due to the bad installation and I will get it checked out soon.

cheers,

richie
