Default RE: Infiniti to Enter GrandAM GT G35

Just saw this in this weeks Autosport magazine (A British publication and the weekly "Bible" for racing).

"British sportscar racer Johnny Mowlem will race a factory-backed Infiniti GT car in Grand-Am this year as part of a deal that could take him into Daytona Prototype category too.

The 36-year old has signed up with Team HLM to race a new Infiniti G35 tubeframe racer, starting at round three in Homestead. The Ohio-based squad will then use the engine from this car as the basis of a Daytona Prototype programme.

Mowlem said: "This programme is in its infancy, but it could lead to big things. I'm delighted to be on board from the beginning."

Mowlem is likely to share one of two G35s with American Bryan Sellars, while ex-pat Briton Ian James is the only driver signed up for the second car."

The article also had an artist rendering of what the car is going to look like, yellow with Menards sponsorship

I am a little dissapointed that they are going the tube-frame "kit car" route, instead of building it on the production uni-body.

Maybe BJ knows something about this?

Great news! I'm happy there will be a Nissan to root for in the Rolex series. It's a pity they spend 90% of the coverage watching and talking about the DP cars, which personally, I find less interesting than the GT cars.

I'm not sure how they will develop a DP engine in a G35, which I'm assuming will be the VQ35. Aren't all the Daytona Prototypes V8's?

I don't see why they call tube-frame cars by the same name as the production car they look like. Are they still using the same drivetrain and suspension setup from the G35 (with modifications, of course). I mean, how much of the original G35 will make it to a tube-frame "G35"?

The article had an artist rendering of the car, I dont have a scanner so cant scan it. It was painted Menards day-glo yellow.

I was a little dissapointed that they are using a tube-frame car but its quicker and easier to build a tube-frame car, than to get a uni-body car to the same level of performance. My guess is they will probably buy a Riley&Scott Chassis and but G35 bodywork on it. I wonder what engine they will use, because if they are using an engine that they will eventually put in a DP car then it is a VK V8, I wouldnt expect them to be putting a VQ35 in a DP car.
