Smile BS autocross setup FAQ?

As an autocrosser that has been out of the sport (for lack of a car) for 4 years, I am looking forward to getting the Z in fighting shape for B stock.

Wheels?

I picked up an 03 track edition. I am going to pick up after market wheels for the street and use, and use the factory rays for autocrossing. Not sure if there are better choices for autocrossing that are reasonably priced (found a couple of nice sets at the $2500 price range) and clear the brembos.

Tires?

What sizes and brands are you all running out there on the stock rim size?

Sway bars?

Going stiffer better for the Z? Brands people are using?

Shocks?

People putting in aftermarket shocks? Koni's anyone?

We need to get a FAQ going to answer these questions. I found a few answers digging through all the posts out there but I know there are a few of you out there that have tried various things. Lets get something going to share the info. That is the only way we are going to make a run against the RX-ugly errr 8.

Do you intend to race with the Pittsburgh SCCA club at Ripken stadium in Aberdeen, MD?

I think for BS you can only change the front sway bar. There is one thread about rt-615s to use on the track wheels. They suggested 255/40/18 all around on stock wheels. For BS isn't shocks under the same rules as sways, only fronts. You can download a rule book here so you can get an idea of what you can and can not change.

Seems from reading that thread people have changed front and rear struts.

no.

bs - FSB, aftermarket shocks, catback exhaust, aftermarket filter element. wheels have to be the same dimension that came on the car and within.. 4mm? or 5mm? brake pads. fluids.

since you have 18s, the fastest tire will be a hoosier a3s0X in 275 all around. 285 v710 wont fit and i don't even know if they make them anymore. dropping down to a 17 isn't really an option. the most cost effective tire would be a 245 in 18 all the way around.

Here's my setup from Nationals last year

Shocks
DA Konis available from Nissan USA Motorsports Division
(SA Konis in the garage just in case)

Front Sway Bar
Hotchkis (full stiff)

Exhaust
Removed the stock muffler, drop 35lbs, put a pipe to aim exhaust down and out from under the car.

Brakes
Hawk HP Plus(F) HPS (R)

Wheels
(enthusiast) Enkie (thanks del!)
Spacers up front

Tires
Kumho 710s, 275 45(or were they 40) 17

2006 we'll be changing some things, testing things, hopefully making some more improvements. But what do I know?

My club Autocrossers Inc out of Maryland (baltimoreish) (http://www.autocrossersinc.org/wp/) is actually running a series this year. I think most of the events will be held at Ripken stadium.

"hmmm its better to just compete in BSP...

You can compete in BSP but it will be a slaughter... There is a certain purple M3 that will make things very unpleasant for you (yes the M3 has lots of stock negative camber)...

I plan to start out slowly this year. Sway bar, Wheels and Tires. Maybe shocks. I am not seeing an exhaust modification this year (I like the way it sounds).

Oh. the maximum differential on wheel offset is .25 inches or 6.35mm...

so you are putting 275s on the stock wheels of 8 inch front and 8.5 inch in the rear? Any rubbing? rolled the fender lips?

Hoosier 275/35-18s fit fine on 18 X 8s (Touring model, no 8.5 for the rear). I use 5mm spacers up front due to a slight rub under high loading.

Thanks for that little piece of info. I'm just about ready to mount my 275 Khumo's on the car (Sunday's our first event), and this will save me a little trouble. I promise to make my Z's presence felt in both the KY regions and Cincy again this year, as payment for all the excellent advice I get from you guys. I don't think we've seen what the car is really capable of as yet.

not true... you are forgetting cat back exhaust, wheels the same size as stock within 4-5mm of the original offset.. brake pads.. aftermarket air filter element.. and most important, r-compound tires.

Do you compete in Lexington? I may be out there in late April for the rolex with the fiance, so I'm thinking about taking two cars out and competing in the Sunday event out there. Perhaps I'll run into you.

Great set up, yet I found the Hotchkis front full stiff have me to much understeer, I went to medium in front and it made a big difference.
The 710's are the best AutoX tire made, but if you plan on driving to the event on the same tires you run on than the Falken RT-615's are the best. Although, just pray it doesn't rain, then both tires will feel like you are driving on ice.
Also, look at getting rid of as much weight as possible! So when you upgrade, not only look at the performance - look at if it will lighten the car.
Also, remove the spare tire, jack, tools, all the mats, all the other junk you carry in the car. I carry about 5# of sh*t (maps, radar detector, cell phone & charger, ...)in the car that gets removed before the race.

Nissan USA Motorsports really didn't want to sell to the public when I got wind of their T2 spring well before performance nissan started to carry it or anyone else for that matter. I emailed them I got a rather standoffish reply that stopped me dead in my tracks from ever contacting them again. TcKline has Koni DA's on the shelf for $417 each with independent compression and rebound adjustablity, they are painted white just to mention it. Would be curious to know where Nissan Motorsports sourced their unit's from.

Whatever happened to your CT-1 swaybar project? I had been waiting for the email confirmation that it went into production.

The Nissan Motorsports Konis are from TC Kline.

As for the sway bars, you got the wrong guy, that was Carter and Jim that were building the sway bars.
