Recommend some Good R-Comps

I'd like to buy one set of tires to last me the season, replace them at the end of the season.

I've got 7 or 8 events on my 275/40/17 Hoosier R5s that I bought on clearance directly from Hoosier before the R6s came out. I did flip them after the 5th event, and they still have more in them. Proper suspension settings are a key element on making them last. I don't drive to/from the track on them either.

Guess we should tell Dave Schotz as well.... How the hell did he put his fbody ahead of the T2 350Z's at the Run-offs on an autox tire.
I ran 275/35/18 NT-01s on 9.5 inch 30mm offset rims all round for a lot of track days on an otherwise stock suspension last year and found them to be excellent.
Fitted fine, excellent grip, turn in response and progressive breakaway. Reasonable wear and they were driven very hard, although I paid the price for no camber adjustment with shoulder cording. No issues driving to and from the track except for the fact they are very noisy.
Ordering another set for this year

News to me as well... I took 1st place at the VIR GT Live Lap Battle event in my class on Saturday, and on Sunday took 2nd...both with the Kuhmo V710's - silly auto-x tire

Yeah, and most of the road racers at the National Championships that are running Hoosiers are running the A6 -- not the R6.
Silly serious amateur and professional drivers and mechanics with years of experience, what do they know?
(That being said, they usually don't plan on having the tires last more than one or two weekends before they replace them.)

which shows him taking 3rd on Kumhos while 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, and 8 were on Hoosiers (2004 data).
I think the general statement that V710s are for short autox/races/open tracking vs long races/lapping is pretty fair. They are a good cross-over tire for those that autox and lap, but I have heard and been part of complaints about them losing traction for 25 minutes of hot-lapping. Additionally, I think it's fair to state that the V710s don't have the longevity of the comparable R5 or R6 Hoosier for open lapping. That seemed to be what the OP was looking for. "I want some R-Comps for road course use (not autocross), so if they take a little bit of heat to get sticky, thats fine...However, I do want something that will last a decent number of track days, and will give me good handling."

People that overdrive can kill any tire in 25 min. Schotz had one of the heaviest cars in T2 and ran the entire race without a tire issue. The three cars ahead of him on the track were all lighter, with more power and all ran on the Hoosier A (autocross) compound tire. Again, guys that can drive can keep the tires under the car, they will also run whatever it takes to win. You will not see any of the track day bricks or "lapping" day compound tires in any of these results.

Do I need to give you a link for all of the MX-5 Cup results also? You know the Pro road race series where the V710 is the spec tire.

I still believe that someone looking for longevity out of a tire is better off to avoid the V710 tire. I know that's not what you are arguing, but feel it needs to be noted here for others reading.
Thanks for the info. Happy lapping.
Okay, found the R-888 and RA-1s on tiredeals4less.com in 275/35/18 for about 340 a piece The R-888 also come in 275/40 for about the same price, as wll as 85/30. I'm leary about the 285's for two reasons, first my front wheels are 8.5", and while people have said they will fit, and I'm sure they will, it still concerns me. Also, I'm not sure 285's will fit under my fenders, while I know the 275's will.
On the other hand, the R-888s also come in 265/35 for about $50 less per tire, which might not be a bad idea; give up 10 mm on each tire and save $200. Definitely make my wife happy with saving money, and when I do go to TT-2 for Time Trials with NASA, might save me some points (although in TT-S it's mostly based on HP/Lb's) 10 mm per tire wouldn't be giving up much grip, I wouldn't think.
Finally, any reason to go with the 35 aspect ratio versus the 40 aspect ratio, if I go with the 275's?
As a note, I have driven on R-Comps before; my previous track tires were BF-Goodrich G-Force R1's, with 245 in front and 265 in the rear. As I mentioned in my original post (I think), I was very happy with the grip, but not as happy with the longevity.

Autox guys stuff wider tires on small rims due to class restrictions (and that fact that they're not lapping at over 100mph). I personally wouldn't go over the manuf recommendations for tire size per given rim. In fact, I try to stay in the lower spectrum to get the best contact patch. I would think that a 285 on an 8.5" rim would generate less grip than a 255 on an 8.5" rim and have worse wear.
So you think 265's on an 8.5" rim would be fine? I'd really like to stay with the same size tires front and rear, to try and prevent some of the understeer the G's have.

Upgrade the front rims and don't tell the wife
Dave. Check Edgeracing.com for prices. Have America Tire/ Discount Tire price match.
Doesn't apply much to you. But I'm running 275/35 275/40 18s on 9.5" rims and it feels great for the street.
