Default Driving Suits

Anyone know where I should look for a reasonably priced driving suit? I'd like something at least an A/5 as I don't want to wear long johns.

Most wheel-to-wheel santioning bodies require at least a SFI 3.2A/5 suit and adding long johns will give 3 to 5 more seconds of exposure time. I bought a nice set of Sparco long johns which are very comfprtable and make me feel cooler then wearing just the driving suit. I've been told that new Sparco Carmyth fabric is very soft, highly flame resistant, and has great wicking properties. Its also very expensive.

Booo for going cheap on safety stuff. Would you buy a cheap parachute before going skydiving?

I unfortunately have a budget and of course I am trying to maximize the amount of money I am able to spend. I will be using the suit most of the time primarily as a crew member but do have plans to achieve an SCCA competition license in the very near future so I just want to make sure what I buy will be legal. I've got an SA 2005 Helmet with HANS attachment points so when I am ready to make that jump I can purchase one of the newer cheaper HANS sport devices.

i know for me its not so much about being cheap. its more of a budget issue. would i buy a no name single layer.... nope! but i of course will shop around to get the best price on anything i am looking for. its not about being cheap, its being smart and not throwing away money. with so many internet shops out there, pricing has become very competitive.

I get that, but I am just a stickler for safety. It only takes one accident to have you sitting in the hospital wishing you hadn't cut any corners on your safety gear. And as far as the budget goes, if you can't afford to race safely, you can't afford to race. Thats just the way I think at least.

not saying to cut corners on safety gear. but when looking for something do you impulse buy or do you sometimes look for the same product only less cost at another location?

affording to race and budgeting to race is two different things. EVery race team big or small still has a budget.

Do you have an bottomless bank account to throw at racing? if you do then mad props, but most racers I know, simply do not. We find deals on cheap pricing, not on cheap products.

well, if that were the case, i don't think anyone could really afford it. i mean, if it was so absolute, then EVERYONE should have a full cage, fire suppression system, the $1300 HANS, the $1300 helment, the $1300 suit, harnesses that you have to replace every two years, the FIA homolgated seats (also probably $1300), which also expire by the way...i mean, the list can go on and on. ($1300 is an arbitrary number by the way )

as long as you are using LEGAL gear, why does it have to be the best super most wammadyne piece out there? these things are rated for a reason guys...like i said, as long as you follow the rules and use what is legal, then you should be safe.

I agree with both of you, he may be going a bit far, but I kind of agree with where he's coming from.

Theirs killer deals out there, great products for little money, heck the HJC AR11 is a $400 helmet that i would put on par with Arai's GP5 that costs over 2X as much.

I am not arguing that point. I completely agree with you there, thats just common sense. I am arguing quality vs. price, not price vs. price on the same item.

Nobody said it was cheap. I'll tell you what though, your budget should go towards the gear you listed before it goes towards go fast parts in my opinion. Just remember that hospital bills will always be more expensive .

^^^i agree with that...safe parts are worth more than go-fast parts any day.

correct me if i'm wrong, but say helmets 'A' and 'B' are both SA2005 rated, but helmet 'A' costs 2-3 times more than 'B'....will 'A' keep your head any safer than 'B?' (please remember we are talking from a safety stand-point, not whether or not one will fit better or last longer)

I think you fellows are arguing a moot point. Didn't he say he was looking for reasonable priced equipment. I didn't see him asking for opinions originally.
