I've used a Canon DV25 for several years now, and am switching to a Sanyo Xacti E2 (smaller, lighter, SDHC).

Fletch, a friend of mine has this camera, and all things considered, it does a better good job. They have some sample video posted on their website. Check it out.
So it's a decent camera? I have a digital 8 camera now but I'm tired of trying to mount the thing and putting tapes in it and then having to transfer the video over from the tapes to the harddrive. Plus, it will only transfer video via firewire and for some reason it seems to have stopped working so that's why I'm looking.

Tried the Canon HF100 this weekend at the track, and I can confirm it does not work. The image looks liek it was shot through a block of Jello. Any camera with a CMOS sensor won't work with the vibration. The camera must be a camcorder with a CCD image sensor. So it looks like I'll be getting the panasonic as well as it has a CCD sensor.

be careful with the latest panasonic...
they changed technology and now they have something they call 3mos. last one with ccd (the one I have) is the sd9 (short of 500$ right now)

All the manufacturers are now moving to CMOS sensors. It sucks that the Canon HF100wouldn't work. It's such an amazing camera.

On a related note.

Before they went bankrupt sharper image had a camera called "The Action Cam". It was a little compact bullet unit that had 2-4G of internal memory and you downloaded it through USB. Does anyone if these are still available anywhere?

All,

Last weekend I used an Aiptek A-HD 720p camera in the track car. It worked great, and since it is in HD, it looks awesome on my 52" HDTV at home.

Here's a youtube link (be sure to click "watch in HD"):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2F4a2SvNkGI

*Please note that even the HD version on youtube is highly compressed*

Best part...it was only $95. With an 8GM SCHC card ($25), it will record in HD mode for over 4 hours. I think it is a pretty good bang for the buck.

Vimeo only gives you 1 HD upload per week, unless you buy a subscription, so Youtube for now.

I got the camera at a Circuit City "going out of business" sell. They are all over the place, though.

with some tricks (disable OIS, fixed focus and fast shutter) works pretty well. the HD quality is priceless

*edit* I also have an oregon scientific... it sucks.. big time. no way too keep it steady somewhere because has its own mounting. I'll use it to record wheel movements with a good amount of duct tape on the side skirt and a safety cable to don't lose it.
Are you capturing in 1080p 24 fps? Have you tried the 720p 60 fps?

you can't with that camcorder... only 1080.
1920*1080 or 1440*1080.

I convert on the fly when I download the video to 720p (more than enough for me and less space on the hard drive)

Any one have any input on mounting a camera without a harness bar? Thanks. I saw a mount on an impreza this weeknd that clamped onto one of the headrest adjustment bars and extended to the void in between the driver and passenger seat. Im probably going to pick up Aiptek. Oh and thanks for the seat time PDX.
