Default Time has come.........................

Finally i found AutoX events in my area. No wonder i wasn't able to find one cause i was only checking out car forums...lol should've checked out SCCA stuff early.
I'm thinking of signing up for an event in march since that's when i have school break. Before i actually go to an event, i want to prepare myself for what's coming and what i need.
I know some events or practices lend helmets to people who do not have. Still, i'd like to get myself ahead and start learning about helmets. What are some full face helmets out there (don't want $500 helmets) that i can use both for AutoX AND Drift? SA approved is the only thing i should look for?
My front tire is 225 stock 18" and 245 rear is Nitto Invo. Front tires have camber wear inside and outside (swapped the tires left to right) but plenty of tires in the center. willl i be fine if i just run with these on? it's my first time AutoX so i'm just going out there for fun..not so much concerned about time.
One AutoX event wouldn't kill my tires...right? i'll be getting an extra 17" set when the time is right.
Is there anything i should be awared of if i make it to different classes? either ST or SP. These are my mods: stance coilover, aftermarket adjustable front and rear camber arms, solid compression arm bushing, HR y-pipe (y pipe for 07 model), SS brake and clutch lines, JWT intake, plenum spacer, and PS cooler. I might get a single exhaust in a few month.

Thanks in advance

defenitely not on the "1 auto-x gonna kill my tires" comment

When you do get some 17's - get some 17x9 or 9.5's and Im biased to MBs for some cheap wheels...

Different classes will depend on tires (ie: R-Comps) or if your boosted iirc..

GL and Im sure others will chime in on the subject.. YOUR GONNA HAVE A BLAST!

#1 - Yes, Helmets are generally required for actual events. Shop around and see what is available. It looks like you have a price in mind - work with that. SA2005 should be fine.

#2 It sounds like your tires are already killed. But if you are just going for the experience - run them.

#3 One AutoX will not kill your tires.

#4 I don't know.. I didnt spend that much time AutoXing.. see Scca website/email or someone at the event to determine your run group.

Good luck.

A few answers -

1) SA2005 helmet should be fine...check out a site like this one for pricing and a good idea of options http://www.soloracer.com/ However, I recommend going to a race shop and trying them on for fit. Each manufacturer's sizing/fit is a bit different.

2) As long as the inside of the tires have some tread, you should be fine for an auto-x. Most auto-x groups will make you do a quick tech and they will visually check tread.

3) As far as modifications, you can either check the organizations rule book before hand or when you sign in onsite, tell them your mods and they will tell you which class...not always right but if you are just there to enjoy, shouldn't matter.

Getting ready for autocross? is a common question. You are ready. Put 40 PSI in the tires and go.

With low tire pressure your tire will roll, causing the tire to run on your sidewall or close to it. To keep the best traction you want about 5 psi more than normal (street tires), this stiffens up the sidewall and keeps traction in turns.

You want to ride on the tread not the side wall.

SM2 (or SSM) is pretty much a rx7 class. I think there were 2 vettes that finished in the top ten this year... The rest were rx7s. Nationals are tough.

On a local level you can win ANY class as long as your club doesn't have anyone faster than you that day I have routinely won SSM class wins locally, even set FTD with the local BMW and Porsche clubs... I would never be competitive in my Z at nationals, however.

If ya still need an SCCA member number PM me.

I got back from AutoX..It was a blast for the first three runs. They weren't sure if i belong to STR or BSP. Since STR started after lunch, i just told em that i want to run in BSP, first group.
I had an instructor ride along with me on the first one. Got like 76.-- sec.
Second run, no instructor and got 74.-- DNF lol. I went to the left side of the cone rather then the right.
Third, more harder braking and accelerating. Got 66.1- sec. Received a little paper that says my time and "1st". (ran in novice group)
Fourth, this time i was pretty bored. I turned the music on waiting in the grid, never realized that i didn't turn it off until the end. got 74.-- sliding all over the place. I hit a cone right in the center of the front bumper. I say that i was bored because i realized that the traction on my car sucks and can't go any faster in the corners than 3rd run. Even then, i decided to floor as much as possible and brake as little as possible and hard. A lot of Sliding and understeering lol
First place in all classes were like 55.-- sec. I could've went close to that time if i had some hoosiers like them haha
it sucked all the cars in my BSP class were corvettes and porsches.
I'm looking forward to go to another event in Feb

By the way, the loaner helmets are heavy as hell...not good

You might want to check into the LA chapter of the BMW CCA. They just had an autoX at the streets of willow and it was a blast. I did it in my F-150!

Lots of track time and VERY good instructors.

Congrats! Stay on street tires for a season or so first. They let you "hear" mistakes better than r-comps. Once you go to a set of A6's or v710's you will never go back.

Sticker hoosiers are closer to 1200-1250 in more BSP friendly sizes.
