Where do you mount your GoPro?

I have gotten the most positive feedback from mounting it on the underside of the front crash bar poking out the grill. I use a 3m clip.

Good question. The honest answer is both. I'm still at the DE level, but pretty much ready to solo at my local track (CMP), so 1) I've still got a lot to learn and video can probably help and 2) all of this is still a novelty to me and recording and sharing the fun is great too.
Bottom line is, I'll play with it and experiment and see what works, what I like, what is most informative, etc. I've kind of gotten the video bug and I'm enjoying editing and using the GoPro for other stuff too so its just another part of the fun.

I have figured out a very cheap, simple tether. I went to a bait and tackle shop and found various salt water fishing leaders shaped like this:

On the 'y' ends of the leaders one branch has a snap swivel and the other has a metal ring. The leader is made out of high test nylon so it will not scratch the paint as it flaps around in the wind.
For mounting on the small driver side side window I loop the leader through the suction cup base and then the other end goes in the side window and loops around the shoulder harness attachment point on the b-pillar. A 12" leader is perfect with minimal excess length to flap around.
I still have not figured out how to tether it when attached to the roof but I'm working on it. It might be overkill but for the solution mentioned above it cost about 99 cents.

I would be worried about the camera bouncing off the car at speed if the suction failed and the tether held on.
I would have to consider the cost of dent(s) removal vs new camera.
The urethane bumpers seem less prone to being dinged up by a flopping cam, but I'm not so sure about the sheet metal.

The way I will have it rigged the tether will be very short. Not a lot of room for the camera to bang around. And as mentioned, if it comes off without the tether it could easily damage someone else's car. We'll see. I may even take a spin (off track) with it hanging from the tether just to see how much it bangs around. If it really gets wild then I'll ditch the idea.

Went to the track yesterday. Tried several mounting locations. I think the best view of the track comes from the interior windshield view. I think the most entertaining view is behind the driver window. Below is a two lap sample. You can see the tether (fishing leader) up high. It caused no problems but of course the suction cup did not fail. You can see the mic cable below it. I ran it through the car and out the hatch and taped the mic right between the exhaust pipes. I think the exhaust sound is good and you can even hear some tire squeal at times (but not all of it!). There is still distracting wind noise but not sure anything can be done about that.

Here's my question. Do you want it to see what it to learn or see what you are doing, or make cool videos for your friends. Either is a prefectly good reason they just have completely different goals and mountings.
For the latter there are great shots from the sides, and mounting low helps show the sense of speed more, which doesn't always convey well in video.
For the Former, see if you can mount it to see your hands and feet, plus down the hood to see traffic and track position. If you don't have a rollbar to mount it to there are some pretty good headrest mounts.

I usually mount my camera on the back window, just in front of the rear strut frame. This gives me a decent view out of the front of the car, and gives me a view of my hands and helmet.

No headliner. Go Pro 3M backed clip on the roof. Going to pop it off and change the angle a little to make it a bit more symmetrical. but over all I think it sounds great, and it's educational to watch later. Once I get the close up on footwork I can do PIP and I will be set.
