Default edumacate me! Coilovers

Okay, my question is rather embaressing in its own way
can someone explain to me the difference between coilovers and springs/shocks?

I dont seem to understand what is what. Is ocilovers a combination of springs/shocks?

Believe me, I did some reading... from what I understand, coilovers are adjustable.... but arent certain shocks (such as Koni's?) adjustable too?

the entire reason Im asking is mainly because of my feathering issue. I want to solve it... so Ive read coilovers/camber kit is my best solution.
But Im in hopes that you guys can explain to me the difference between coilovers and shocks.
With coilovers... do you still have stock springs/shocks? Ive heard of people having coilovers with Koni Yellows....

some help please

Coilovers are threaded shock bodies with a perched spring, that are height adjustable. The better ones allow you to adjust spring rate, ride height, bound/rebound seperately. The uber ones will let you adjust bound and rebound seperately, this is track only stuff which is over kill for the street. You can also get a lower spring like the H&R's with an adjustable shock like the Koni if you don't want adjustable ride height. The rear end of the Z has a small amount of camber adjustment. You will need adjustable upper arms like the 350Evo's if you want to adjust front camber. There are adjustable camber kits for the rear aswell to give a wider range of adjustment (Hotchkis has a good one). For feathering, try going to non-directional rubber to replace the bridgestones and get a good 4 wheel alignment. Good luck!

A coilover shock is a combined single unit of coilspring and shock designed to work together in relation to spring rate and valving and to travel in the same plane of motion. Coilovers are usually adjustable. The front stock shocks are coilover shocks but not adjustable.

Aftermarket coilovers are usually adjustable. Adjustments may range from ride height adjustment, shock rebound, shock compression, and spring preload. They may have one of these adjustments or all of the adjustments.

Since the coilovers shock, and spring travel in the same plane of motion it is easier for the shock to control spring motion.

Koni's may or may not be a coilover depending on what the application demands.

You can buy adjustable shocks such as Koni's. Again if the spring is located over the shock it's a coilover by defenitions. Coil Spring Over Shock.

The rear of the Z is not a coilover as stock. The spring is located on the lower control arm mounted away from the shock. There are a few aftermarket true coilover shocks for the Z application.

A coilover won't help feathering. A proper alignment will.
