Default Brakes Comparison From Stock to StopTech

http://www.zeckhausen.com/Testing_Brakes.htm

This is an experiment done by StopTech along with Dave Zeckhausen to record the distances and temperatures for the stock brakes, stock brembos, StopTech 332mm big brake front kit, StopTech 355mm big brake front kit, and StopTech 4 wheel big brake kit. The results are interesting, your stock brakes arent as bad as you think. There are plenty of Z owners with brakes designed for track use, because the stock brakes fade easily during hard driving. But this test shows that unless you are buying big brake kits for strictly track usage, you might want to rethink that big purchase.

Always good to look at wet braking test on Tire Rack and to note the 25 foot differences [from just 50 mph] between the worst tires tested and the best.

Dry braking is important but wet may be more so and every single cycle activation of ABS just makes it longer and longer.

If you disable the ABS almost every pad [oem and aftermarket] will lock the brakes/tires even at 80mph with enough pedal pressure.

Just to clarify, that testing was not done by Dave, rather it was our own test session to develop our 350Z brake system which we invited Dave to come out to.

Yes Performance model! LOL!
However, what the article didn't touch on, was how amazingly sweet the BBK looks compared to the wimpy "looking" performance model brakes.

For the price of bbk's I am happy as hell to have paid more money for my brembo's. Replacement frozen rotors are $128. One thing that isn't mentioned is which brake pads were used with the stoptech kit.

The stock non-brembos aren't horrible and are fine for normal driving. But as the article shows in track like conditions (repeated 80+ mph stops) heat owns non-brembos, and even starts getting to the brembos where a bbk can dissipate the heat faster and give you more reliable braking.

This test has been around for a while now & it is much more informative than the typical brake test done by most magazines. I think it is a must read for anyone that is planning to drive aggressive on or off the track as well as anyone considering purchasing a brake kit.

After e-mailing Dave Zeckhausen and reading that article, I regret changing my fronts to Hawk HPS. The OEM had great initial bite and a higher MOT. Dave recommends the Axxis ultimates and informed me that NONE of the low dust pads will perform as well as stock or the ultimates.

I've had a non-brembo Z and a GT Z with brembo... and I gota say the bite is way more noticeable on the GT. Although these tests dont reflect that. Definitely a good article to read before spending tons of money on big brake systems tho.

Unfortunately human leg muscles are not very accurate in determining whether a pad requires 9 pounds or 13.5 pounds of pedal pressure to produce a specific deceleration.....yet this represents a 50% decrease in performance!

Stopping distance is less than 100% scientific because the driver can vary the application forces unless a measurement is included.

"Dave recommends the Axxis ultimates and informed me that NONE of the low dust pads will perform as well as stock or the ultimates."

The point is what is great for a 250 pound football player may be inadequate for an 95 young girl.

All I know is that at Pueblo Motorsports track (a 2.2 mile road course, with 10 turns, and I could get my G up to 120+ on the front straight), the stock brakes on my 2005 G35 with JWT TT kit faded to nothing after 2-3 laps. I haven't been back since I got my Stoptechs, but I have no doubts that they will do much better than the stockers on my G.

Make sure to install some track worthy pads before you hit the track...The Axxis Ultimates that ship with the kit wont cut it.

I already switched out the Axxis Ultimates for Axxis deluxe fronts and Posi-quiet rears, because no matter how many times I beeded the brakes in, the low speed squealing would come back after about 2-3 days. Rebedding the brakes every 3 days was a PITA.

I have PFC-01 fronts and Hawk HT-60 rears for the track.
