Steering rack problem?
My Z is making some crazy azz creeking sound wheen I turn the wheel to the right. I jacked up the car to see if I can locate where the sound is exactly coming from but when there is no weight on the tires then it doesn't make the noise. It seems like its getting louder and its only When I turn to the right. Was wondering if it might be a steering rack problem or suspension or something.
Anyone have any ideas?

Hey, I've been getting the same issue on my '03 Z - but on lefthand turns. It sounds like metal on metal clunking, like a loose spring, especially when going over rough pavement on left turns. Also, If I jerk the steering wheel to the left an inch, I get a clanking sound too.
Took it to the Nissan dealer. Says I have too much play in the steering rack. Bastard wants $1500 to replace the steering rack. I said hell no. I'll look into it. I talked to the parts guy at the dealer - a guy who works on his own muscle cars and actually knows something. He said the steering rack shouldn't be the cause of the sound since it's basically a screw drive. He's leaning more towards tie rods or bushings or a loose wheel hub.
I'll get under the car in the next week and keep you posted on what I find.
