When shocks on coilovers wear out?

I tried searching but could'nt find anything and I know this is probably a newb question but when the shocks on coilovers wear out can they simply replaced or is it more more to it than that?

you can send them off to the manufacturer to get rebuilt.

Is that usually exspensive, well compared to buying new shocks when using a basic spring/shock combo?

With specialty components always prudent to buy a spare set. That way vehicle is not down for months waiting on rebuilds. Same with wear and tear items like turbos, superchargers.
