Default Coilovers..What gives

So I realize I'm a neophyte when it comes to upgrading cars so I'm hoping I can get some answers here. I've done some searches, but the threads are a bit convuluted for getting detailed answers.

What exactly are coilovers?

What do they do/not do?

Why should you get them?

Once I have that, I'm then wondering how do coilovers compare to springs?

I'm trying to get some better understanding of the basics so I can participate on this forum.

Thanks for the instruction.

Coilovers are a strut/spring combination that (typically) allow adjustment of ride height as well as dampening.

Springs may lower your car change the spring rate but are typically not tuned for the stock struts and thus MAY decrease the life of stock struts

Hope this helps.
