Hi all-
Just a quick question. I have looked this up to mixed reviews. Some people say dismantle your calipers completely before powder coating. Others say don't bother as temperatures on the brakes reach the temps that you would get to while baking for the powder.
I'm going to be doing a rebuild of the piston. So i'll be taking out all of those seals. My question is do you have to split the caliper to remove the little rubber diaphragm that is in-between the two sides of the caliper? I've seen people powder coating the two sides separately, and people doing them with the bolts installed and calipers not split. Just figured I would ask everyone here. Thanks in advance.
I bought some brembos secondhand used and rebuilt all the seals. They were pretty beat up so I did split them but it is not recommended that you do that since the odds of getting them back together and torquing everything down to proper spec are low. You do need to split them to get to the rubber diaphragm seal. I don’t see why you need to replace if they’re not leaking.
if you’re getting them powder coated, I don’t think you need to split them. Also, you don’t want to risk getting any debris between them to cause improper mating of the two halves.
Thanks for the reply. @Heel Til I Die I was thinking that I wasn't going to split them to do the powder coat. I was just worried that the little rubber diaphragm in the middle would melt while powdercoating. However, after looking at the calipers while sandblasting them it seems like the bolts that hold the two halves together were on there the last time they were powder coated. Since they were gold...... Also, because they are the gold factory color i'm thinking this was done originally?
Gotcha. That seal should be fine. It's meant to withstand high brake temps and I doubt powdercoating exceeds that. I don't know if the bolts were painted or powdercoated from the factory with the bolts installed. When I redid mine, I definitely went over the bolts after I cleaned them up.
What color are you going with? Something fun?
I was lame and went with a stock-ish gold. Not quite the orange gold OEM color, but more yellow.
Im doing them in an orange. Right now the car has these pretty bright blue colored rims that that I got on facebook marketplace. I plan on redoing the rims in like a gun metal grey and maybe adding an orange stripe down the top of the car. The car used to be a police car that was in a vinyl wrap. They left the wrap on way too long and it damaged the top. Parts of the hatch and the hood.
