Default quetions about getting a dupicate title

first off, this is my first post on this board so.. "HELLO."

i'm on the verge of getting a new 06 350z touring model w/ 6 speed in daytona blue. just going to dealers to find the best deal. i will be trading in my current car at time of purchase. however, i was trying to find the title for my car but am unable to, so i will have to get a duplicate title from the state, which will take approximately 3 weeks. my question is, will the dealership be able to take my car without the current title? i do have the lien release letter from the bank stating that i satisfied the loan (back in 2002) and that i own the car outright. will that be enough for the dealership to get a new title or will i have to request a duplicate copy of my lost title? does anyone know? if it means i have to wait 3 weeks then so be it. thanks.

You registered 6 months ago. Why didn't you get a title then?

can i ask what registering here 6 months ago has to do with it? i am finally in a position to purchase a 350z and when i looked for the title for my current car (honda prelude) i couldn't find it. so i'm asking a question about the duplicate title. i just received my loan release letter from the bank last week and then posted if i would need to get a duplicate title or if the dealership would be able to do all the legwork using my loan release letter. thanks for the warm welcome and not answering my question though.

I forgot about the big hug and warm welcome.

The answer is I doubt it. I would not accept a car as a trade-in without a title. The dealer is interested in turning the car around fast (putting it on the lot) or auctioning it. Without a title it will be difficult to prove that the car is yours. Besides you cannot assign the car to another party without a title.
