Default Buying a z

I'm sure there are many posts like this, I tried the search and didn't find exactly what I was looking for. From what I have read there are oil problems with the 06's? This is the one I'm looking at let me know what you think.

If you’re just starting to consider this car, (and not yet ready to pay for a complete mechanical inspection) there a few things you can check for any oil consumption problems. Have a look inside the exhaust tips for any oily residue, also pull the dipstick to see if the oil level is at or under the low mark.

If these two things look ok, take the Vin number to a Nissan dealer. Since dealers won’t normally give out warranty repair info, you need to prepare for this visit. When I need favors from parts and service men I usually wear my lowest cut top, works every time. Since your screen name is MotormxMan I’m guessing this might not be the most alluring look for you. You will need a female friend, or one of the lovely my350.com ladies (they all know how to “really work it”) to introduce herself to the service manager and state they’re considering buying this car. Mr. service manager can access the Nissan computerized records to see if this car has had a problematic past with oil consumption issues.

bring him down to around 17,5-18000 and it'd be a great buy. Just make sure you give it a real good lookin at before you buy it, or even take it to a mechanic.

Also the 06 oil consumption thing might not have affected this car, or it might have to a varying degree. Just check the oil level and look in the exhaust tips for oil residue. The exhaust will probably have a black soot coating inside of it, but thats normal from the cars running rich from the factory.

20,000 miles I assume that the car is under warranty.

If I can find a 2007 for a decent price should I look at that? What's the difference in motors? And one last question I was reading around and what. Is plenum?

the plenum is the big piece of aluminum that sits on top of the motor. It directs the airflow into the individual runners for the cylinders.

yeah, I found an 06 mt for sale this weekend that I'm really interested in. This whole oil consumption thing has me thinking twice about the 06.

The '07+ had the HR engine. It has a little more power and a lot of people seem to love it. I drove both when I was looking for mine and not could not tell a huge difference in the two so I went with the '06.

As far as the oil consumptions go, they are nowhere near as common as some people make it out to be. I have one and have never had a single issue. By no means am I the exception. The vast majority are just fine. The '07 and maybe the '08 had recalls for the clutch and transmission. So you take a risk either way.

Good luck with your purchase.

+1

but pretty much every car you buy now-a-days is going to have a recall on something sooner or later.

My 03 fell under a transmission recall and I had to get it replaced 3 times before they got it right.

After 6 months maybe the 350Z is not for you. Have you looked at the RSX. Performance AND reliability in one package.

I've owned a 2003 Z, and 2006 G35 and now a 2009 370z. I'm so lucky to be close to ZCarGarage in San Jose, CA. If your serious about purchasing a car, no matter what year. Spend the money to have a credible shop do a comprehensive maintence check. It's pays off in the end. Only, do the check once you've completely done your homework, in terms of doing an exhausting pre-check yourself.
