What do I use on my dashboard to protect it from the sun and to keep it shiny?

Also any suggestions on where to buy AND what type of sunshield to buy that protects the sun from going through the front windshield and damaging the dashboard? I have used the silver type in the past but they don't last. Also, they never seem to fit correctly even though I buy the "correct" size.
