Has anyone used a low pressure water spray to clean their engine bay? I was thinking it would be safe to visit a coin carwash b/c all the electrical components are in the battery bay.

I’ll tell you my method, but not necessarily recommend that you use this method:
1. Rinse engine bay and underside of hood with a fine spray of water.
2. Prepare a spray bottle of 50 Mr. Clean/50 water.
3. Spray underside of hood and engine bay. Let sit for 10 minutes.
4. Agitate dirty areas with a assortment of paint brushes.
5. Rinse with fine water mist.
6. Dry with leaf blower.
7. Apply dressing to damp cloth, then wipe plastic engine bay parts.
Good question? Mine engine bay is getting dirty also. Has anyone used a steam cleaner/vapor cleaner for this purpose? It's a little scary for me to spray water on the engine--might short out something.
I've pressure washed mine at the car wash with no problems so far, just used the degreaser that the coin-op had then rinsed after letting it sit a couple minutes. A belt squeeled after first starting it but that was it. I used to do this with my xterra alot after off-roading. just be sure to cover your air filter. I forgot and left a plastic bag on my intake on my Xterra which was supercharged, and it managed to completely suck the cone filter to about half it size before the engine stalled!
Yes I felt like an *ss!
Hey all i'll do a write up this evening on engine bay detailing! I don't have any recent pictures but the write up is extremely simple and VERY VERY effective, i use it on my moms beamer, my supra, my 240sx, and a few buddies cars... they turn out beautiful!

steam will get into more crevices (wiring connectors, etc) than sprayed water
DavidV,
I'm interested in your very cool cold air intake set up. That extension pipe at the front (briliant idea) is that part of the K&N system? or did you custom install that . What about the air filter isolation box? Thanks for any insights. PS: I have a Pop Charger installed.

The tube in front is connected to the scoop located behind the grill. Its all part of the kit. The filter box is designed to prevent hot air in the engine bay from entering the filter. So its kind of the best of both worlds: ambient air like the AEM CAI, and an easy access filter like the Pop Charger.
I clean my engine every month. It takes an extra 10 minutes while washing the whole car.
1- Hose it off to get any surface stuff off.
2- Spray the bay with some heavy degreaser. (Formula 88)
3- With a wet rag wipe down the whole engine. You don't need to be meticulous, (If your OCD takes over, add 10 minutes to the process.)
4- Hose it all off, then dry it with an air compressor or something to not get water spots.
5- Spray the engine down with CRC. It's safe on all the engine parts, metal and plastic.
And Bling! Your Engine is now sparkling.
