To avoid swirl marks use only microfiber or 100% cotton towels. Always make sure they are clean. I also use a micro fiber mit for washing and use nothing but Zaino products on my car (www.zainostore.com).

Check the site out. It has lots of great detailing tips and the best car care products period imho.

My car is close to 3 years old (38k miles) and no swirl marks. What do you think?
i find it hard to believe that a 3 year old car with 38k miles has no swirl marks. Do you have any closeup pics of your cars paint?

Also, is it possible for a novice to avoid swirl marks altogether, or is it fact that eventually swirls marks will show? I plan to buy the Zanio kit with all the nick knacks (micro fiber towels etc).

Tell me I can keep this car clear and clear of swirl marks easily.
Taking care of the car should be easy if its not a daily driver. Unfortunately it is impossible to avoid swirl marks on a black car. If you take proper care of it there will be few and wont be noticeable, but all black cars will eventually get them. Since you are going with zaino z5 does an excellent job of concealing very minor swirling.

If every wash has been done by the owner this is not too hard for me to believe. Until next week, when I turn it in for a Mag Black Z, I have been driving an 03 Super Black Maxima. There are swirls on mine, but only on the hood, and they appeared when I got lazy and took the car through a wash instead of doing it myself. Using the right stuff (microfiber or cotton as mentioned in other posts) and doing it yourself goes a long way towards maintaining a nice black finish. Before the Max I had a black 4runner, I learned all the lessons the hard way on that truck.

Just to throw in 2 more cents. I haven't tried Zaino yet, I will with the Z when I get it, but the Meguiar's NXT does a nice job of hiding those swirls too.

I have a '04.5 Super Black ZR. No swirls! From day one...I always wash in one direction every time. Using the same procedure when waxing a car. It takes less than 20 minutes to wash a ZR. Most car enthusiast's will admit...Black is Sparkling Fantastic when clean! Nothing comes close!! It does cause jealousy...it's a man's man color & with a lot of class!!! Good Luck!

Amazingly Enough, My Z is Filthy right now due to winter driving.

I went in to the local drug store to pick up some beer yesterday evening and the kid behind the counter (who i have never seen before) said; "Its such a shame your drving such a nice car and its dirty like that"...

to which I politly replied; "You can go back there and grab a bucket and sponge and wash it if it bothers you that bad ."

AGREED! It's the most beautiful color in the world once it's clean. ESPECIALLY at night!

Sometimes it sucks to keep it clean and right now during St. Louis winter it really sucks...but when it is clean it looks better than any color on the road. A spotless Super Black Z at night is the best...well worth it.

Get the black...with swirl marks and fingerprints it still looks the most awesome...plus only a girl cares about having minor imperfections.
Its like a guy who cares if his shirt has wrinkles or buys some brand name *** shirt... Me personaly I dont care if I have a minor scratch or swirl mark

The ones I posted are only a couple of months old. No swirl marks or scratches of any kind, believe it or not....

I do have a few chips on the front bumper from freeway driving in the winter/rain. I use an OEM bra during the summer months so even those are few.

I have a black 03 Ford Expedition (EB) as well and it doesn't have swirl marks either. I do see a few (very few) fine scratches on one of the fenders which I'll remove as soon as I have time. Most people wouldn't even notice them but I do. It's a Zaino vehicle too.

Thanks for all the imput guys...I'm gonna hit the dealers to have a glance at the colors. The choice comes down to Magnetic Black or Silver Alloy drop tops. I'm not sure if SA will look nice with the orange vent seats? I think not.

I also, dont like the fact from what people are saying that black will get swirl marks no matter how well you maintain the car...that would suck big time.

Even with the Nissan paint being crap, if you take care of the car as soon as you get it I think you'll be fine.

Technically all colors get swirl marks, on the brighter colors you can't see them unless you look closer. I spend ten minutes polishing my silver Honda and an hour doing my Z ... there's no way the silver could ever look as good as the super black.

What ever you do, if you live in a County that has a lot of sand and wind, DO NOT get a black Z!

I wash my car at nights and by moring I have a thin coating of sand on it, but lunchtime it's covered, and I could cry. I wonder if it really was worth it.

Yes, once clean, they are the best IMHO, but to keep them clean is a real biatch.

See? Black looks good for the 20 minutes that it's clean, or until it's covered with swirls. I loved mine when it was clean. And unlike a certain post up above, I'm NOT a girl, nor do I wear "*** shirts", whatever that means. I WAS disappointed in Nissan's poor paint quality, and I didn't like having a dirty-looking car.

Frankly, I like the Silverstone color better anyway. It looks more streamlined with the top up OR with the top down. The black body/black top looked somehow clunky. It looked nice with the top down, but not so great with the top up.

Who else feels like this guy?
No matter how careful you are you get swirls?

The light side of the force is ever stronger now.

The dark side is cool but in the end it loses

He was a typical "Hater" (jealous). Remember, he was behind the counter nuff said. I'm bad I know. Fortunately or Unfortunately depending on how you look at it, Mine is silver and was my preference besides white. I chose silver for these specific reasons that you all are citing. But, I agree black is hot when it's sparkling clean.

I totally agree with the comment on the convertible Z. When they came out I always thought with the top up, it does no justice to the nice lines of the Z but with the top down it's hot.

What is this "Zaino" stuff you guys are talking about?? Is it a product I could easily purchase from Auto Zone or Pep Boys. Also when I purchase everything what should my personal cleaning kit include??
