Question Rust Proofing

I just got my Z and was wondering if I should rust proof it. Has anyone else felt this was necessary to do?

dont do it.
Your Z comes from the factory with rust proofing, and you have a factory warranty specificaly for rust. Rust proofing is a dealer installed scam along the lines of $600 paint sealant that can actually void your factory rust warranty!

Default Do NOT apply aftermarket undercoating/rustproofing.

This is serious. Do not EVER get after market or dealer sprayed undercoating.

The factory "system" includes various weap holes to allow water to escape. When companies spray undercoating they innevitably block some of these holes and cause problems.

This has been covered in consumer reports and in other magazines as well. Nobody (who is not trying to sell you something) recommends aftermarket undercoating because it can actually do harm.

The factory rustproofing is pretty darned awesome these days. I don;t see any reason to spend the money even if it didn't cause harm.

If it is sound reduction you seek, then perhaps you should look at interior apllied products like dynamat. They can reduce cabin sound and they don't cause other problems if applied properly.

Just my $.02 of course.

Default PS: Undercoating

Two more thoughts on the topic.

Undercoating can void some factory rust warrantees. Check that first.

Undercoating can add a lot of weight to the car and slow it down. If you want every last bit of performance you don't want to add lots of weight.

Dont do it, I would also think that most of the under side parts of the new Z are alum. anyway.

Thanks gents for the advice. Since I am not going to run it in the salt, I probably wouldn't need it anyway!

Default well...

I wouldn't always believe what the dealers tell you as far as rust proofing goes... The fact is, it's almost impossible. As an experienced rust fixer, I've realized that rust can attack in so many ways that it's impossible to stop completely. In time, Rust will get to all metals that can harbor rust, and no matter what "rust proofer" you use, the result in time will be the same.

Ford offered a "rust proofing" feature on my car, as well. 32 years later?
