I’ll tell you my method, but not necessarily recommend that you use this method:

1. Rinse engine bay and underside of hood with a fine spray of water.
2. Prepare a spray bottle of 50 Mr. Clean/50 water.
3. Spray underside of hood and engine bay. Let sit for 10 minutes.
4. Agitate dirty areas with a assortment of paint brushes.
5. Rinse with fine water mist.
6. Dry with leaf blower.
7. Apply dressing to damp cloth, then wipe plastic engine bay parts.

I feel like such a n00b - but when I cleaned mine over the summer I ended up with a car that wouldn't rev past ~2k. We hypothesized that either a coil pack or sensor was shorting, the MAF somehow got wet despite the plastic bag wrapped over it (car was OBVIOUSLY off) or water hit hot cats causing them to break up and clog (doubt it, not my theory). I never found the culprit, but after it dried for a few mins (left it running in this pseudo-limp-mode) I shut it back off and it started up and ran FINE.

My point is, be careful what / how much you get wet
