I can tell you what I have used to take it off, but I can't tell you if it will hurt your clearcoat/paint. I used to work at a car wash and we used mineral spirits. Hold a rag over the can and soak it a little bit. Start wiping it. The tar will start to soften then streak a little bit. After a couple wipes it will come completely off. I am pretty sure that if you hose down the area with water for a couple minutes where you just used mineral spirits, it shouldn't harm your car. Just to cover my ***, I WOULD personally do this. But I am in no way taking liability for your car if it harms it. Sorry, just had to add that.

awhile back, I forgot the namebrand, but it was in a blueish gel bottle. that worked great. go to your local pepboys/ autozone car store and ask the guys what they would recommend. good luck!

WD-40 works at removing tar without hurting paint or clearcoat. It softens the tar so you can just wipe it off with a soft white cloth.

bug and tar removers for cars at any auto store or target or walmart. runs for about $4-5. works really good. My friend took a road trip from SF to LA and back. Once he got home... he sprayed it.. let it sit for a while.. and wiped it off. well he had to do 2 apps cuz his hood and bumper was a mess. works well and didn't harm the paint of course

The best tar remover I have ever used is Stoner's Tarminator, its a thin liquid and softens and removes without seeming to dull or effect the wax or polish coating, based on using it on a Zainoed finish that is.

I would not use the tar remover compounds that look like polishing or rubbing compounds, they strip wax pretty easily and dull the surface requiring re-polishing and re-waxing to make the repaired spot match the rest of the surface.
