for those who wax/polish by hand. which way is the best in your opinion? or does it even really matter? I use blackfire and it says to use small circular motion... but i've noticed some people (judging from the buff marks) do it in straight lines. should I use the same technique for QD spraying also?

I recommend that ANY product that is applied to your paint be done so in a straight line. That will greatly reduce the risk of producing or enhancing swirl marks. And, of course, use a nice, fluffy microfiber or 100% cotton terry towel.
Sal Zaino suggests that the application be done in these directions for optimal light reflection and refraction:

Definitely use straight motions. No matter how careful I was, I now see some straight swirl marks on my G. But, you can only see it under very bright lights and at only the right angle. If I had used circular motions, they would be 10X more noticeable. Time for some coats of Z5
