Default Drag Racing Questions

Before I go to the drag strip for the first time, I want to ask the forum some questions so I know what to expect. First off, what parts, if any, are broken the most while drag racing? My Z does not have F/I so I am not too worried, but I want to be aware. My mods are, Injen CAI, Injen SES exhaust, Kinetix Cats, Kinetix V4 Plenum, and I will be on 19" wheels with street tires. Like I said, I don't think that there will be any problems, especially with street tires, but one can never be too safe. Also, what RPM should I launch at with street tires and stock clutches? Thanks.

Well, I can't tell you about what might break, cause I don't know the 350Z that well. But I can give you some general drag racing tips. Since you're on street tires avoid the water box if you can, that's for guys running slicks, it'll just make you spin. Don't do a big burnout on street tires, just roll them over a few times to clean them off. You may want to play around with tire pressure to get a better launch (22psi worked great in my truck with stock tires, I don't know if the same would hold true for your car tho). Go slowly when you're approaching the tree, and look for the timing light (it'll be a small box on the ground, before the tree, you're not gonna pull all the way up to the tree), when you see the prestage light come on, stop. Wait for the other guy to prestage (it's a courtesy thing). Then roll slightly forward till the staged light comes on. Be ready, cause after both cars are staged, the tree will start. For the average driver in a street car, you're going to want to leave when you see the third amber light, if you see the green, you're too late (as far as reaction time goes). And don't worry about the guy next to you, just concentrate on your launch and your shifting (if you're a manual). oh, and make sure you don't have your a/c on (not sure how warm it is in Vegas this time of year), because you don't want to have condesation dripping on the track. And if you're running 13's you'll need a helmet. Other than that, just have fun!

bad360rt - Thanks for the advise, but I have been drag racing for a while, I just haven't taken the Z to the track yet. Good advise for a new guy though. Oh and it is 44 degrees here in Vegas right now, and I don't know about you, but thats cold for me. <---SoCal native. BTW impressive numbers on your R/T. You must have drag radials or full slicks to keep your tires from spinning, right? That back end weighs nothing.

Oh, ok, sorry about that, didn't realize it was just your first time with this car. And yeah, 44 degrees is chilly no matter where you're at, I wouldn't call it cold tho, but then again I grew up in NY and live in Philly now (we still have snow on the ground from two weeks ago lol). Thanks! I've been running 28x12.50 ET Streets, got a new set of wheels and tires for this year. Bogarts with 28x13.50 Hoosiers Also have adjustable drag shocks. Shooting for 1.6 60' times this year, best to date is 1.73. It does get a lil tricky trying to get traction in a truck, it's insane on the street, nothing below 35-40mph

I like the R/T. My first car was a '99 Dakota with the 5.2L V-8. It was between the 4x4 and the R/T. I chose the 4x4 because I was more into off-roading back then. I bet that thing is rediculous on the street though.

Yeah, it's a handful, I don't go WOT unless I have plenty of room I'm gonna try out some M&H drag radials when I get it back on the road, see if they help.

I have Mickey Thompson ET Streets on my 1970 Chevelle and I couldn't be happier, but you couldn't really run those on the streets. They are also tube type. But you could just haul them down in the bed of your pickup.

I've been running ET Streets at the track...and a few times on the street I have a full set of Bogarts with Hoosiers for the track this year. But I'm gonna run the DR's on the street

Mike-- What's uppppppp. My experience drag racing, i lowered the pressures to 24 psi, went around the burnout pit, and launched between 3000 and 3800 rpms. I hit 2.1 60's all nite, between 3300 and 3800. 2.205 @ 3000. That was @ Famoso (about 15 mins from buttonwillow).

btw, speedventures on 26th and 27th

Sosa - Whats up man. Thanks for the advise. I am at a toss up though between the Speed Ventures event and a PSCA drag racing event. The drag racing does have the advantage because it is here in Vegas. I will be racing my 70 Chevelle though.
