Thumbs down Went to the track, horrible.....

well I went to the track tonight with my friend that has a 11sec Camaro, this is the first time I have ever raced and timed myself I SUCK....I started off by reving my car at about 2K and launched spun all through 1st and could not catch second gear grinded the hell out of it finally caught it and ran a 15.91 WTF ...Waited a little while and got my friend to drive it, he red lights on off the start and finishes at 15.00 @ 95mph he told me when he got back he missed 3rd gear. I'm very disappointed, I need to learn how to race I can drive it all day but when it comes down to it I CHOKE....

15.91 may not bring a smile to your face, but its faster than all the forum members who do not race. Congratulations. Now you can enjoy working on your times. Practice makes perfect.

BTW can you scan and post time slips? Thanks.

I remember when I first went to the track, you get all shaky and stuff on the line. it must have taken me about 100passes to stop that. Its worse when you are actually racing at an eventit takes a while to figure it out. if it were easy what would be the point. I have been a track regular for about three years and am still improving my launching, lights and shifting. When i bought this new cobra I took it to the track for the first time before I did any maintenence on it and my first pass was a 15.5 @ 91. Talk about ****ty. After some tweaks and a few visits to the track i went the time in the sig. I should be in the low 13's next time out with a little more seat time and tweaking.

The problem is easy to see: work on a 2.0 second 60-foot time and you're driving a better than 14.0 second 350Z.

Yea thanks...When you first launch how high do you rev? Has anyone tried to start out I second and run, would that help since I can never seem to get my hand to react as quick as my foot?

no offense to the car owner (being a track noob) but what are you talking about the RT's were .2 something which is the equivelant of a .7** on a standard sportsman and an -.08 red light or a .408 on the same sportsman tree...

back on subject we've all been there...believe 400+ passes later i still get the butterflies sometimes....the hardest thing i remember was pressing the gas Before i saw green....it didnt seem right and i cut many 1. something lights early on...i got over it by purposly red lighting over and over till i moved closer to turning on the green...it wasnt till this year i got my first .500 ... had a couple .501s and one .499 same night later i got a .501 i had that bish surrounded ...anyway practice ...its very addictive...going wednesday looking for a 12

Don't worry about reaction time. That doesn't change your 1/4 mile time.

The easiest way to figure out the launch is to get some practice on the street. Same thing with shifting, practice on the street. You'll get better.

Start out in second? That DEFINITELY would hurt you big time.

Try not reving that high, and slip the clutch a little when you take off. Learning to take of near idle would still be WAY better than a 2.7 60' time. I know I have a different car, but I've pulled a 2.0 60' on street tires leaving at idle.

Hope you isn't thread-jacking but I just had my first day at the track with any car, too. I have the same problem you were also -- 60' time.

I weighed in today at 3550 lbs. I weight 160, I have the touring 6MT and the JL SB which isn't easily removed. I ran on street tires (g-force ultras).

I was having a hell of a time launching and I might do what was suggested above by starting at idle. At least until I get a better feel for launching. I also missed 4th a couple times which explains my awful trap.

On a side not, my buddy ran 10.6 followed by a 10.7 in his supra. He was told he's never allowed back to that track since he has no safety equipment

Don't hit wide open throttle too fast. Rev to 2000 rpm and feather the clutch out, once you hook then hit WOT, that way you won't spin all the way.
Lower the rear tire pressure to 26 psi and try a quick burnout to heat the tires up a bit. In addition don't worry about reactions times for now, they have nothing to do with your actual run and you shouldn't worry about it until you get your 60's down.

and the rest is parctise, practise, practise. You should be easily in the 14's

Don't worry bro.. 1st I ever went to the track in my Evo I ran a 15.8/15.9. I bogged the engine like hell. After about 15 runs that night I got a 14.1. So keep practicing!!! Once you get you launch down and that 60' better you'll have awesome times. At least on a bad run you're still faster than the rice out 16-17 second Civic.

Just keep your focus and don't worry about reaction time, just try to keep the rev's up without bogging down. Tell yourself what to do before each run. No one can hear you.
