Default going to firebird tonight...

and i have a few questions. first, the last time i went to race(that was the first time, i had just gotten my car a few weeks before that and its my first m/t) one of the kids with a z i was talkin too said something about it being better to have only a small amount of gas in the tank when racing, is that true?? i got to thinking about it and was he just talking the extra weight? or was he just pullin somethin out his ***.. if it was the weight he was talking about, im aure thats not going to matter much..

this is my first time going knowing my car really well, my first time was horrible.. any small tips would be apreciated

You know gas is denser than water right?

Where is Firebird BTW and what time do they open & close? Do they have helmets to rent (I cant find my old one ). I have not been to the dragstrip in over a year and I have been itching to go.

I race Summit ET, and always run with 1/4 tank of gas. Not sure if it helps ET, but it helps be consistent throughout the racing season.

Normally most tracks have you wear a helmet at 13.99 or better

And I believe gas weighs like 4 or 5 lbs a gallon??? so a full 20 gallon tank is like 100lbs vs 25lbs for a quarter tank......75lbs is no joke, drop your spare, passenger seat and your quite a bit lighter than when you rolled in.....its not like 500lbs or anything but every pound helps

The density of gasoline (petrol) is about 737.22 kg/m3
1 GALLON of gasoline weighs 6.152 lbs. (for reference, 1 gallon of water weighs 8.34 lbs).

30.76lbs for a 1/4 tank 5 gallons
123.04lbs for a full tank!!!!

So doing a little research we find the difference between a 1/4 tank and a full tank is actually about 92lbs!!!

Easiest way to shave weight, and free!
Trunk mat 5lbs
Floor mats 10lbs
Passenger seat 50lbs
Spare + tools 40lbs
1/4 tank of gas instead of full - 90lbs

195lbs lighter than before

Figure thats 1.5-2 tenths in theory ....

Thank you for posting this... I know a 1/4 tank weighs alot less than a full tank, but I never actually took the time to do the math.

I'm going to be going to firebird today. Are there any gas stations nearby that carry higher octane (prefably 93+) gas? I'd like to advance my timing for today's runs. Thanks.

You did good. 100 percent better than the dyno queens who have never seen a dragstrip. What rates in my book is that your are out there giving it your best. 10 points for effort.

x2... I've always been pretty lucky..first pass ever at a strip matched the expected results of a stock LT1 auto like I had.. but other people don't beat on their cars or 'race' as much as I did back in the day so I was pretty comfortable. It also helped that I sat and watched numerous passes before I went down myself so I wasn't as nervious and kind of knew what to do when I got to the line. It's pretty intimidating!!!
