Bought my Z in '09 to be my drift ***** / dd. Drifted it for the first two years and all I had done to it was a welded diff and ripped out the ABS. I’d skip on the sway bars, I don’t even have one in the front anymore (coilovers).

I’d say to 2 things that could up your game without braking the bank would be a hydro e-brake and wheels with an offset as close to 0 as possible to get rid of under steer. I got BOSS 338’s they for about $180 a wheel.

Nice 240 BTW

As someone who also started in a 240 at 16 and now in my z at 24, i would say you should junk the vlsd and go welded first. then good tires. drifting on stock z wheels w/ good tires is fine unless you can afford cheap 18x10's + good tires. then coilovers and tie rods + spacers at the same time so u can get the alignment done.. that's really all you need to be competitive. enjoy.

dont buy the VLSD!!! just buy an OS Giken Superlock 1.5 . Problem with the VLSD is it only locks up sometimes when it gets high pressure. My friend has a built S14 with an RB25TT and his has a VLSD the other night in ill say some spirited driving (3 car drift ) his back end locked up right at the end and it kicked the back end out and we had to stop mid drift sadly

from what ive heard cant weld the Z diff cause you will just break the weld with the torque, a lot more than the 240. lol

^ i know a bunch of z's that drift fine with welded open diff's, a good weld should hold up fine. I recommend a good 2way diff if you plan on ever going F/I tho...

i already bought the vlsd, but i dont like how inconsistent it is, ill probably weld the open diff later on, the z is really just gonna be my daily for now, but thatll be explained in the next update.

thats why im saying though just go with the 1.5 and daily drive instead of vlsd or youll just hate drifting with the VLSD after a while cause it locks up when it feels like at and not when you need it.
dont forget a super angle kit on your car cause i know our angle of steering on our cars suck! im trying to get one from powered by max racing, its not on their website yet but they have one its on Ryan Kado's drift car, its also on his website ryankado.com

Nice driving, and nice 240.

alibinobob's tips for the wheels with an offset close to 0 as possible is a good tip but you'll probably want them in a 9.5 width, not so much to reduce understeer though, you can do that with tire size and good tires. Youll want that 0 offset for clearance with added angle. A hydro e-brake isnt necesarry but would always be a nice upgrade as the stock one isnt very good. But ive been making mine work for me.

Project X mentioned the pbm super angle kit. Very nice kit, tons of angle. Do you need all that maybe, probably not yet though. Depends on how much youre looking to spend. If its not in your budget you could always just do tie rods with spacers and removed or shaved bump stops.
And i also have been using a vlsd, it sucks but its better than an open diff. you just have to drive the car differently than if you had something that locked up like a real diff or a welded. And a welded diff will hold if its done right.

I also dont think you should worry about sway bars. Mods should probably be Coilovers, more angle wether its tie rods and spacers or pbm kit, and wheels, and get some good sticky front tires IMO.
But mainly the thing thats going to help you the most is just keep driving and pushing it, trying different techniques and things. Just dont push it too hard too fast. haha

yeah but im not planning on buying anymore stuff for the z for awhile, but that will be explained in the update.
And pbm has had the 350z SAK on their site for awhile now, its $800 which isnt bad since they include the outers and inners, aswell as the other stuff. but its still only pre-order, iirc it comes in march 2012

Welded is fine for z's just take it to someone you trust to do it right. Mine had been my daily for two months plus a weekend long event just fine. However, it takes away some of the majesty of owning a z as a comfort vehicle.

id get a true 2 way (i went with kazz for price and since i wasnt worried about the noise) and an osiris tune to pick up some more low end power and to sync your throttle since its currently governed. after that some coils. and i like my sways helped a ton with body roll but to each thier own as the guy above said he didnt think they were nessicary ^

I agree thats crazy if thats true.. and your parents seem pretty sweet to be helping you out with that.. at 13 my dad was signing me up for soccer not putting me behind a wheel haha.. and ive been thru 2 engine builds and swaps and it can be a pain so big ups if you did all that work urself

on the diff stuff Ive only ever drifted open or welded diff when in the 240s, so now more power and lsd is what having to get used to
