So tell me if I am understanding this correctly:
Southbend offers three different pressure plate; HD, SS and Xtreme? Do you know what the clamping load for all three are? And how does that clamping load compare to the stock pressure plate? How do the three compare with pedal effort? Is it a linear relationship with clamping pressure, or do they alter the pedal stroke to compensate?

HD plates are about 1900lbs, SS plates are 2500-2700lbs, Xtremes are built to order depending on what you need, They can go as high as 3800lbs with the DE plate.
Clutch release is always going to be better with a lighter plate load, It will take more throw at the bearing to release a heavier plate. The 27--lb plates still release very well.
Thank you, that is very helpful information. Out of curiosity, do you know what the clamping force is on a ClutchMasters pressure plate? As far as I can tell they only offer one plate.

If you have a pic of the (actual) pressure plate shoot it to me and I can probably guess pretty close at the clamp load.

Here is a picture of the ClutchMasters pressure plate that came with my FX300. Also I put a caliper on the tip of the finger and it measures about .123". Any guess as to the clamp load on this guy? The pedal basically feels like stock.

Looks like a modified stock cover. Probably around 1900-2000lbs.
