True. That's why the army primarily attracts the poor for jobs. It's kind of a welfare program for people who are willing to work to get ahead. ie workfare.
If you have no eduation and join as a private, even after 10 years you'll be making 50 - 60K which is a lot of money for those guys. On top of that when you reitre as a Warrant and you're making 80K a year, you get your 40K a year pension, and that is a really good living for a lot of people. A lot of people who join up are from the East coast where jobs are scarce and the ocst of living is low. They retire after 30 years at 50 and live out East like kings.

Well like I said, to make 100K as a general service officer, you'd have to be in about 25 years. So if you joined when you were 18 you'd be looking at making 100K as a Lieutennant Colonel at around 43 assuming you got promoted all those times.

No, basically it's a little bit of job performance with a little bit of who you know. They try and be as objective as possible but it's really a matter of getting all the pre-requisites for the next rank. The first couple ranks are pretty easy to get, then they become more difficult.
