-it's a much more physical, rougher sport that is very much about physical intimidation and imposing your physical will on an opponent (like football or boxing)
-the hitting
-the fighting (yes, it does serve a purpose but that's for another post)
-it's more difficult to play; imagine trying to handle a tiny puck on a stick while not looking at it (you have to keep your head up in hockey, if you don't, you're gonna get run) all while being on thin blades of steel standing on ice while 6'4 250 lbs. monsters try to slam into you
-scoring a goal or making a save is much more difficult that draining a 20 ft. jumper
-basketball is too offense oriented, they score on just about every possession; hockey is defense oriented in that you really have to work hard on a possession to score a goal
-hockey players are by and large humble team guys and, besides Eric Lindros, I can't think of any whiny diva hockey players; basketball is FULL of whiny divas
-while both sports have guaranteed contracts, the vast majority of hockey players don't loaf; some basketball players loaf all the time in almost every basketball game I've seen (college exempted)
-the Stanley Cup is the oldest North American sports trophy and unlike the Vince Lombardi Trophy, the Joseph Naismith Trophy, an Olympic gold medal, the World Cup, et. al., there is only one Stanley Cup

both have their appeal, so i dunno why there's the comparison. both sports were invented by Canadians though :P
i'm probably going to get flamed for this but i'm going to say it anyways.
Why is american football called football? you only really kick the ball in 3 occasions...International football is where it's at anyways :P
