Default Got pulled over yesterday...

So I'm approaching the intersection of dixie and Dundas in good ol mississauga and as I come up to the intersection I notice a cruiser pull up beside and kind of 'check out' the car... I had my windows rolled down, enjoying the cooler weather... I pretty much minded my own business, had the radio at a respectable level...

So, light turns green, I accelerate at a moderate pace and he swings in behind me... I check my rear view mirror now, as he made the lane change during the intersection which is of course illegal and probably vindicative of an upcoming pull over / plate run... sure enough, 5 seconds later the lights are flashing and i'm pulling over to the side of the road.

So naturally, i'm slightly annoyed, as I'm a young guy (approaching my mid twenties) in a sports car that is modified I figure i'm a target (i've only been pulled over 3 times in my LIFE) and ALL of them have been in mississauga... and I don't even LIVE here lol.

Anyways, officer gets out comes up to the vehicle, leans in and asks "Are you aware it is illegal to modify your car with aftermarket mufflers?"

I had the ARK GRiP put on my car not two days ago (Very similar to HKS True dual) and was running it with Berks HFC and without silencers, loud and deep... but not *that* loud.

I responded that I was not aware it was illegal, and that the exhaust did comply with the 93db standard to the best of my knowledge, however that I did not have the silencers in...

He responded by asking if i had my insurance, licence and registration, which are all in my gym bag in the trunk. Sure enough, I get out and get them for him... asks 'So who owns the car?' I replied honestly, my mother.. (Didn't put the title in my name considering the insurance would have been astronomical as I am not quite 25 yet and she doesn't drive... *I paid for it before you all flame me lol*) he kinda nods and proceeds to ask me if I've ever been in trouble with the police/been arrested/have illegal stuff in the car.

This is where it gets interesting: He notices I'm pretty into bodybuilding and is a larger guy himself, asks me where I train, we shoot the **** for maybe 30 seconds about gyms and supplements... he says 'alright, let me just run the license' (by this time another cruiser has pulled up behind him and he's hanging out too).

Original cop goes back, other cop leaves, comes back with my license and explains that he's not going to give me a ticket and that i've never been in trouble with the police before (of course, I said that?).. So I ask him honestly, 'Is it really that loud?' to which he resopondes 'not THAT loud, loud enough to draw heat...' so I said alright, I'll toss on the silencers... he says again

'Yeah, you should do that, just toss em on there, i'm gonna let you off, but if it was opp highway they'd definitely ticket you!'

Ultimately, I'm probably certain the fact I look like a meathead may saved me in this instance... he didn't ask to look under the hood or anything nor inquire about any other mods.

So I suppose the actual question is, and i've googled and searched breifly, is this *actually* illegal? If so, i'm sure there's moderate leeway... and I suppose share your stories if you will about similar intances?

Thoughts? Opinions? I know tons of you ride around with a lot more and probably a lot louder setups... has it ever resulted in these instances that have gone through with tickets or what?

Thanks guys, appreciated, sorry about the longer story.

I have x02 and i honestly dont think its loud, infact i want to make it louder

I got one before when i was driving my civic about 3 yrs ago. It stood in court and i had to pay $110. I personally think it really depends on their mood.

its definatly their mood. but yes technically by law any non factory muffler is illegal. doesnt make sense as i probably pass 100 cars a days with aftermarket exhaust. they would make a killing if they pulled over everyone... and i could be wrong but i dont think he is allowed to look under your hood with out a warent.

I had Injen with test pipes. It's LOUD and backfires sounds like gunshots and it's angled tips which looks even more bait. Never had problems with cops for this issue.

But then again, sauga cops are probably the worse. Worse than OPP in my experience.

It is not illegal to modify the exhaust .
An idiot could say you tampered with an emission control device but it would not stand in court and they know that.
It does fall under an excessive noise ticket under the HTA .

Peel always has secondary cruisers for all roadside stops. No worries about that.

Cops are usually cool as i get pulled over alot lately but i talk clearly and sensibly and i have no issues or get any tickets.
Act like a kid and get treated like one.

Thanks guys, much appreciated. I will look into the HTA for the noise specifics, guess the silencers are staying on for now as I am in suaga a lot recently.

And as a point of note, I have noticed by an extremely large margin there appear to be the most pull-overs in Suaga (don't know about the rest of peel region)... must be nice to have enough cops on duty that secondary cruisers for all road stops regardless of severity and before anything is actually issues is in their budgeted allowance... tax $ hard at work heh.

appreciated though definitely.

it is NOT illegal to modify the exhaust on your car as long as it complies with sound regulations. btw, the porsche, ferrari argument etc is null because certain cars are allowed to be louder than others. I heard somewhere in Europe that the faster a car is, the louder its allowed to be, lol. But yeah, notice how the 370z is quiet? Thats cause there have been new laws passed it several of its markets pertaining to max noise levels.

I don't think stock Z's qualify as fast, really. I mean compared to exotica. But again, stock RSX's are far quieter than stock Z's and stock Z's are louder, so there you go. I'm just talking about from the factory.
