Default nismo flywheel/clutch/plate review

Just got my Nismo flywheel, Nismo pressure plate, and Nismo clutch installed today. First of all, I didn't hear any of the dreaded cement mixer noise that everyone talks about. I wasn't really looking for it, but so far i haven't heard it yet. The car feels like it has more power, this Nismo flywheel isn't the lightest so the rpm's still don't drop down that fast, but i like it that way. The clutch pedal feel seems like i get more feedback, it takes slightly more pedal push to engage, and it grabs a little lower than stock. It's still a super easy drive and i can feel it grab when i just pop the clutch a little, instead of slipping like the stock clutch did. Shifting feels a little notchier since you have to be a little more precise with the rpm's i guess, but still very forgiving. I think the car sounds different revving too in a good way. Overall, the car feels much faster and still easy from a stop. Great combo for street driving. For track you probably still want to go with a Jun/JWT flywheel or even the Tilton flywheel for even faster revs. Anyways, the guys at Performance Nissan installed it, it was done in about 4 hours. They did a great job.

I'll go weigh the stock flywheel/clutch tomorrow, but it weighs a ton!

You're welcome, i've seen a lot of other combinations of flywheel and clutch reviews but not all nismo. But anyways, the stock stuff weighs in at 45 lbs even. That is the clutch/plate/flywheel. Now i'm just waiting for all this damn rain to stop.

When you let off the throttle, does it feel like it drags the engine down more?

Thanks Andy,

I'll take that into consideration next time hehe. J/K Jason's been great. Looks like the crew is getting pretty big there, but i'll definitely be back there again for my next major mod.

Lawn Dart, I'll say yes to your question, but to me it didn't feel like a whole lot. When this rain goes away i'll let you know more how i think it feels.

Do you mean engine braking? (How quick the car slows down when you let off the gas?) I have a JWT flywheel, and it definitely has more engine braking than the stock flywheel did. Don't know about the Nismo, though. I imagine it might have a little more, since any reduction in flywheel weight should give you more engine braking.

Yes, engine braking. Thanks for answering my Q.

Okay, update on clutch. There is slight engine braking, but not much on throttle off. I did hear the dreaded cement mixer sound when i let RPM's drop, sort of bogged a little and you hear that swish sound, but it goes away really quickly. First time i heard it and it's not anoying to me, it's only when you mis-shift or do something like that is when you hear it. Feels like it grabs hard, but i'll take it easy for a while to break it in i guess.

I wonder what they did different with your install? My Nismo flywheel/clutch set up sounds like the entire cabin is vibrating under 2500 rpm

SPf4000, I definitely don't experience a lot of vibration on take off from a stop, but i'm usually accellerated past 2500 pretty quickly. Maybe my mods are helping, more power down low or something? I'm not sure, but i think it drives pretty good for a grabbier clutch.

Most of the "I got a new clutch threads" I have been reading start with the word "WOW". Your thread doesn't seem to have as much enthusiasm Islandsnow, why is that? Did the Nismo not make that big of difference? Were you expecting something more? I would really like to know because I think this will be my next mod. I'm finding that picking the right clutch is as hard as picking the right exhaust.

Actually, i think acceleration/response feels great and feels funner to drive because of that. The guys at performance were suggesting i go with the JWT combo and i was just wondering if that would be a funner drive, or would it be a pain to keep it in the right RPM's shifting more often then i would like. So for me the wow factor is there, i like the how it feels and it still retains enough forgiveness for that occasional mishift. The pedal pressure and response is about how i like too, you can feel more when the clutch is about to grab and it grabs hard once you release it. But one persons wow factor can be completely different than anothers. If you're used to like the old porsches with mechanical cable clutches, this still might be too tame a feeling, although the clamping force is there. So that's why i chose to say more on how i think it feels so others can sort of decide if they want to go with something lighter, but definitely i think track drivers would want a lighter flywheel than this. I think for daily driving this is plenty strong and fun.

I concur completely with Islands review of this mod. The Nismo clutch/flywheel set up is the way the car ought to come stock for the enthusiast street driver. Better grab, more precise feel, and noise is only on occasion at idle or if you are pulling through the 2100-2500 range under load...which usually you ought not to be doing much of, and certainly not on the track. It is not enough of a difference for the track oriented driver. But for better performance and street civility, it is a no brainer in my estimation. Especially if you are in for a clutch replacement anyway and the labor to tear it down is already committed to. Then you are just talking the delta on the parts, and that is not much.

I often take some flak for saying this, but if people like the way the stock clutch feels, they could just keep the stock clutch. If you don't have a lot of miles on your clutch, then replacing it is simply a matter of feel as opposed to necessity. I chose to keep my stock clutch when I installed my JWT flywheel simply because I only had about 5000 miles on my stock clutch. Not even close to needing a new one.
