Can I take a 6 SPD differential and put it straight into a 5 AT instead of changing the Final Gear?

you mean just take the VLSD out of a 6MT car and put it into a 5AT?

yes, but since you've got a base model you'll need to buy new stub axles that will work with the VLSD unit (from Courtesy Nissan -- or some other place that sells OEM parts)

if you use the search function you'll find plenty of threads on this already posted

I believe you may need to use a different pumpkin, but don't quote me on that. If you want an OEM VLSD, I have one available for you...

you can switch out the pumpkins, yes

most people with 5AT cars do that - junk yards are a place to look

No, your A/T ring and pinion gearset will not work on a M/T core. This is why Cusco makes Z33 clutch type LSD's in M/T and A/T version's.

The oem diff cores for A/T's and M/T's are not the same parts and differ in where they place the final drive in the case (pinion gear). The diff on the left is a oem A/T diff, and on the right is a KAZZ lsd for a M/T, notice how they do not mount the gear at the same height in this work bench view.

Your best bet for going oem VLSD with the least amount of money spend and the least hassle is to go to Car-parts.com and search 350z 2003+ Carrier. You should be able to find one for $500 complete pumkin shipped. Their # is 1-888-733-2540.

Or just find someone local to you that wants to swap out pumpkins. I will be going this on Sat if all goes as planned.

are you talking about wanting a different final drive or specifically have a reason to use a 6MT LSD in your 5AT housing, cause that won't work.

just swap the whole pumkin with a 6MT

don't even try to mess with changing the final drive. There's too many wrecked Z's laying around in junk yards with good 6MT pumkins

Sorry to steal this thread but i have a 03 touring 5AT. Now i have already got both the 3.59 gears and also a VLSD out of a 6MT. Now from my understanding there isnt any more parts i need for the swap or is there? From the way I am taking this post is that i cant do this at all???? Please tell me that I am wrong.

sounds like he is wanting to just swap the complete assembly from 6mt to 5at... yes you can do that...

cheepest way to do it is go to a junk yard, find a manual that is wrecked in the front end... take the complete housing... put it on your 5at... call it a day...

yours is auto right?

then the housing is different than 6MT

it's easier to swap the entire pumkin with a 6MT one. Just do it that way. You'll save 100's of $ by doing it that way. You can do it the other way too and spend a lot more money and risk it not being installed quite right
