Default B&M Shifter Install Question

I bought a used B&M short shifter and had a couple of questions for those who have installed them.

1 - The section in the instructions that says you need to grind out .125 inches in the 'prescribed' area. I can't tell from the picture in the instructions where to grind out and does this REALLY need to be done? Why?

2 - Grease -since I bought mine second hand, there was no grease (except leftover grease from the last install. What type of grease is it and is it that important to have it 'full'??

Thanks

I installed mine about a month ago.

1. As you look down from the drivers seat, it will be the bottom right hand corner. Yes, you need to grind this out to accomadate going into reverse.

2. Yes, fill it up with grease. I will post this evening as to what type of grease.

When you do install and take it out for a test drive let me know if you notice vibration in the shifter after 4Krpm's. I have been getting vibration between 4 - 5.5K then it diminishes.

Anyone else with this problem?

vibration is normal.. (albiet minor vibrations) if you're getting huge slapping noises then no.. thats not normal.

i usually get vibes on hard accelerations. no real way to get rid of it ..

Chebosto,
I just got off the phone with B&M, you are right the vibration is normal. The tech did tell me if it gets extreme, call him and he will issue an RA and ship out a new one.

The vibration doesn't really bother me it is the chattering in the ****. I have a metal/carbon fibre, I am going to try a leather one to see what happens. I'll let you know the out come....

Jeffa5,
Did you find out what grease to use? It is a white hi-temp lubricant, same type you would use for wheel bearings.

I did not figure out what kind of grease to use yet, but I definitley have a question on the grind out area.

My instructions (and something I saw on the web) say to grind out the 'upper left' section ( towards the drivers foot), but MyZneo said the lower right (the opposite of what I ground out. I actually have no problem getting into reverse and, in fact, I cannot get it to 'lock out'. The pin seems too low on the shaft to ride up on the plate. No matter how 'close' I mount the plate, I do not need to push the shifter down to get it to go under. I almost looks like the pin needs to be moved up the shaft about 1/4 of an inch. Has anyone else experienced this???

im pretty darn sure you are supposed to grind out the upper left (drivers side as you see it sitting in the drivers seat) portion. i think myzneo is mistaken or looking at it from a different angle. at least that's the portion i filed down.

the pin is too low to make contact with the guide. this is a design flaw. b&m's new model has a larger/taller pin. supposedly, they will replace the old style shifters with the redesign. i have the same problem, but have not had the chance to call/take out the shifter. if you call them, let me know how it goes.

hope this helps

Guyz, you are both right. I was a** backwards. To solve the reverse problem, I moved the stock plate to the far right (passenger side). I do have to push down to get in reverse.

I bought and installed the shifter in March. How long ago did u put yours in? I may have the newer style. Have u noticed ant excessive vibration?

Well, I finally drove the car after putting in the used shifter and I must say that I amazed. The thing shifts perfectly and has absolutely NO rattles at any RPM (I am using the stock **** without the little spacer thing). I do have the old style as I can put it right into reverse without pushing down.. although I have NO concern about actually doing this for two reasons 1) I don't do any fast 5-6 shifting 2) Reverse is so far over that I would REALLY need to not be paying attention to stick it into reverse.

All in all, I am very pleased with this purchase

I have a feeling something is wrong with mine... defects do happen. I am going to pull it and get it replaced, hopefully I will have better luck the second time around.... the rattling is just enough to annoy me!

Jeffa55,
Glad your install went well... Happy driving!
